Lunar New Year Festival at AUW The Lunar New Year Festival is one of the biggest annual celebrations at Asian University for Women (AUW) based in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

*What is Lunar New Year? Lunar New Year is the first day of the year according to the Lunar Calendar which is computed based on the cycles of the moon. Lunar New Year is traditionally celebrated by many countries in Asia such as China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Tibet, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore etc.

*Significance of the Lunar New Year celebration:
For most of Asian communitie

s around the world who celebrate Lunar New Year, it is the most significant and the most celebratory holiday of the year. Through centuries, it is when workers can rest from their work, and get to spend time with their families and relatives. Family members from near and far would travel to be with loved ones in time to usher out the old year and welcome in the new, with great festive flourish. In addition, many people travel, buy gifts, wear new clothes, cook festive foods, and burn firecrackers to celebrate the day.

The Lunar New Year festival aims to provide students from 7 countries at AUW, which are Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, a festive atmosphere to enjoy their grand cultural celebration in Chittagong, Bangladesh. What the Vietnamese usually eat for the Tet festival?

3. Kho Qua Nhoi Thit (Stuffed Bitter Melon Soup): a soup that has bitter melon stuffed with diced pork and herbs. In Vietnamese, Kho Qua means β€œovercoming sufferings”. With this dish, people hope that all obstacles in the old year will pass and they will have a new year with many advantages.

4. Thit Kho Hot Vit (Braised Pork Belly With Eggs): this delicious dish consists of marinated pork and eggs that are braised in coconut water. Thit Kho Hot Vit is on the Tet meal as standing for the wishing of reunion and fullness.

5. Mut (Candied Fruit): if you visit Vietnamese homes during Tet, you will be offered this traditional snack. Mut is made from fruits dried with sugar. Tasting this sweet treat on the first days will sweeten your whole year with full of luck and happiness.

These are some traditional foods you will find in many Vietnamese families during Tet, which each dish has their own wishes for a better year!
