We are truly hyped to present Hamed Sadeghi | حامد صادقي at City Recital Hall, Sydney for our third instalment of this year’s JAZZ:NOW program - and the launch of his new record Comfortable - on September 5th.
Hamed is a true artist in every sense of the word - restless, hardworking, curious, reflective of context, devotee of culture, an iconoclastic virtuoso. He represents the best of this country’s creative identity. His new project ‘Comfortable’ features a slew of musicians who share these qualities - musicians who have been a part of the vanguard of creative music in Australia for decades, as well as those carving the path today.
To have Zela Margossian’s (Zela Margossian Quintet ) formidable quintet sharing the bill - on one of Australia’s most lauded stages no less - means that this will be a night of Australia’s best. Zela’s music sits at a unique cross section which traverses the relationship between the musics of her Armenian background and her deep study of jazz improvisation. In earnest I am running out of superlatives to describe these artists - watching them do their thing is quite staggering. You’ll have to come see for yourself. It is a rare treat and a bold move for independent Australian artists - particularly those working in the contemporary improvised music world - to present their music at spaces like the Recital Hall. Our music is often born in DIY spaces and nurtured by our fecund community. Yet we believe that it is important that this music is heard in concert halls and recital centres. We believe it is deserving. We believe it is significant. Let this be one of many more to come.
