Happy Sabbath Yafflerâs family! Hereâs the message from Bishop Peter Cowan from Saturday morning Spiritual Yaffle. âSome of my most memorable and fun experiences as a kid was during my time in scouts. My father was a scout leader and so my older brother and I were recruited into the 2nd Melton Scout Troop. The founder of the scouts was a British soldier who in 1907 devised a simple motto which all young people could remember. It was âBe Preparedâ. From first aid to survival skills, we were taught bush craft and the importance of doing good deeds. I had many fun and amazing experiences that gave me confidence to tackle just about anything.
I have tried to live that motto to, be prepared, up to this day. In fact my professional career as a Project Manager has a lot to do with ensuring that the business is prepared through proper planning to achieve its goals.
In the gospel of Jesus Christ we are also taught the importance of being prepared. We are taught the importance of having food and financial reserves for a time of need, for preparing our children for the challenges of life by teaching them the gospel and for preparing ourselves spiritually to be ready for the Saviourâs second coming. It is this spiritual preparation that I would like to focus on this morning.
Recently I have been reading the sections of the book of Mormon which describes the wars and contentions between the Nephites and Lamanites. I noticed a pattern in the accounts of these wars; the Nephites were always more prepared. It began with the account of the war between Captain Moroni and Zerahemnah. The Nephites were more prepared for the battle by having better armour protection. Their breastplates, arm-shields, thick clothing, helmets protected them from the weapons on the Lamanites. This was new to warfare at that time and caused great fear to the army of Zerahemnah. Moroni and his army succeeded. It was likely that Moroni as a righteous man, had received inspiration on how to best protect his soldiers. The next example of the Nephites being better prepared was again lead by Captain Moroni. The Nehpite cities were prepared with high walls and places of safety for soldiers defending those cities. The Lamanites did come to battle with the same type of amour that they had seen Moroni and his people wear but it was nothing compared to the protection Moroniâs soldiers now had in preparing their cities. Despite all the tactics of the Lamanites, the Nephites always were more prepared. Their greatest preparation and strength however came from their faith in God. They prayed for God to strengthen them and God always did.
In our day we are blessed to live in a land where we have peace from wars. The struggle between the Nephites and Lamanites can be a symbol though of our own battles between living a righteous life and the temptations of the adversary. The challenges that we face against our own natural selves is one we will fight our entire lives. Ephesians 6:12-18;
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
The Nephites always prospered when they listened to the teachings and warnings of the Prophets. I have just finished reading the chapters of 3 Nephi where the people were warned and taught that they should prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ. Those who did not cast out and stone the Prophets were spared from the destruction that cleansed their land of wickedness. They had the amazing blessing of feeling the marks of the Atonement of Jesus Christ for themselves. They were personally taught by the savior and witnessed many miracles.
We live in the last days. We need to be preparing ourselves everyday by putting on the spiritual armour of God and by looking to the Prophet and what he is teaching us. President Nelson and we all have the responsibility to prepare the world for the Saviours second coming. I invite each of you to contemplate your own preparation and make the necessary adjustments to your spiritual armour to be safe. Listen to the counsel and warnings of our Prophets, Seers and Revelators so that you, like a good scout, can be prepard.â If you have just come across this group, we have a Spiritual Yaffle through messenger video call. Let us know if youâre interested and we will add you to the group cat. The spiritual Yaffle is on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning at 6am Melbourne Australia đŚđş time.
