Your 2026 GRAB ME panel, proudly brought to you by Eastern Riverina Arts, was the perfect opportunity to hear the dissection of opening lines, why they’re imperative to a piece of fiction and how much power they can hold on a reader!

To hear every possible perspective on opening lines, we welcomed:
📘 Dr Anita Heiss AM to speak from the angle of a publisher from bundyipublishing and Simon & Schuster AU
✍🏻 Mary Elizabeth to share the perspective of an award-winning debut author with Penguin Books Australia
🎥 and Bron | Book Enthusiast to speak from the view of a prolific Bookstagrammer and avid Riverina Reader

Regional writers also had the opportunity to submit their opening lines to receive feedback from these incredible creatives - and what a treat that was 🍫

How could we not laugh, listen and watch in awe as Dr Anita Heiss AM took to your Riverina Readers Festival stage back in July 🩵

Discussing her extensive career in novel, non-fiction and children’s book writing, as well as academics, Dr. Anita Heiss shared the realities of publishing, how First Nations voices can and should be told, and why writing commercial fiction is one of the most powerful methods of generating real and timely conversations 💬

Flawlessly interviewed by the talented Irma Gold - this headlining session was one to remember!
