Hiya! Or should I say… A-Hoi?
It’s me — the Howard Smith Building. Though I’m affectionately known by my caretakers and locals as The Hoi . Think of me as the friendly patron of all things good that happen within these old walls.

2026 is here, and oh my… things are getting exciting.
First up — some big, happy news.
The Hoi – Coffee House has a new custodian! Bessie Smits, a much-loved Townsville local, has taken the reins and is breathing fresh life into your favourite Flinders Street stop. From Tuesday, 13 January, the doors will be swinging open again, so pop in, say hello, and give her a well-deserved congratulations. Trust me — she’s been busy making some very fun changes that highlight her eclectic style and love of music and art.
Now before you fret — the Harker family isn’t going anywhere.
Nadine is simply shifting her magic into High Teas, Micro Weddings, Events & Functions, and of course the ever-mischievous Hoi Polloi Espresso Bar. You’ll find all her social links below so you can keep up with the good times.
This year, I promise more of what you love: great service, beautiful moments, and a calendar full of memorable events. Follow Bessie, Nadine, and the wider Hoi crew, or drop by www.thehoi.com.au to stay in the know.
So what does all this mean?
Well… in 2026, I’m officially the warm, buzzing hearth of Flinders Street — open day, alive at night, and always ready to welcome you in.
