Perhaps the surest sign that RAAM & RAW 2023 are on the horizon is that Track Leaders has activated our page. Right now it only shows the countdown (4 days to go!). Soon it will have all of the rider names and team names so that all of our “dot watchers” at home can follow the races.
“Dot Watching” is a fun way to keep up with RAAM. This system practically takes the fans onto the course. It’s possible to zoom in on the map to see every twist and turn in the road, the elevation profile can be shown so it’s possible to tell just how steep a particular climb is. Each racer or team’s distance since the last time station is shown, so you can really see the battles unfold as one racer chases another.
As great as TrackLeaders system is, we’ve had crews forget to change their tracker’s battery, and we’ve had racers damage their trackers, so in either case, that racer or team will disappear from the tracking stream. We’ve also had crews forget the tracker in one of their vehicles, (“Wow, racer so-and-so is going down Highway 50 at 65 mph!”). For these and a few other reasons, our official results are still our Results Board and Time Station Reports.
