Reclaim The Night (RTN), also known as ‘Take back the night’ is a global event held annually which aims to keep the issue of sexual violence against women and children on the social and political agenda. RTN began as a way for women to reclaim the streets at night as a violence-free and safe place for them and their children. The event encourages women from diverse backgrounds and experiences to w
ork together to actively campaign and stand up against all forms of violence against women and children and to voice women’s rights to safe homes, streets and work places. In doing so RTN aims to challenge existing violent social attitudes and behaviours that are present in social, political and cultural spheres. Reclaim The Night events have traditionally been held on the last Friday of October and have typically involved a protest march on the streets. In South West Sydney local events in the past have including marches, rallies, art exhibitions and events centering on safety for women on public transport. These events have been held on the last Thursday of October. Historically, Reclaim The Night events have been exclusively run by and for women and children. Oftentimes men have been invited to join in the event by supporting women from the sidelines of activities but not to participate. Men are encouraged to become involved in men’s events such as White Ribbon Day which also aim to advocate against violence against women. Reclaim The Night has a long lineage but this year the Macarthur Sexual Assault Service has decided to take Reclaim The Night a little further. Much musing and discussing and many brainstorming sessions (over many cups of coffee) has lead us down this path… For Reclaim The Night 2014 Macarthur Sexual Assault Service is holding 2 events, the first is a creative arts festival for young women the second is an event for Reclaim The Night for all women living in South West Sydney. Together with these events several online resources will be developed and launched online at the October RTN event to further discussions about sexual violence in social media and online communities. The project is bigger than we have done before but we are excited about what RTN might look like this year and in the future! Below are some quick details about the project and the events.
