Sedition 2019 is a celebration of public art and protest in the 1970s – a compelling, immersive art event focused on the Sydney underground and the creative tsunami that broke there. This multi-venue festival runs from August 30 – September 29, 2019 and includes:
• Sedition: Paper Tigers an exhibition at the National Art School featuring almost 200 works;
• Sedition: The Art of Agitation an art exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales;
• Oxford Arts Factory and National Art School music events with new music and bands reforming especially for these one-off gigs;
• A film season of underground classics presented by Palace Cinemas;
• A festival of thoughts and ideas including conversations with luminaries of the day who will recast the cultural history of Sydney in radical new ways at the State Library of New South Wales, the University of Sydney and the National Art School.
Some of the artists whose work appears in the show include: Brett Whiteley, Martin Sharp, Garry Shead, Peter Kingston, Paul Worstead, the Tin Sheds collective, Michael Callaghan, Reg Mombassa, Therese Kenyon, Marie Mc Mahon and Jan MacKay. Musicians include: Shy Imposters, Flaming Hands, Dog Trumpet and more to be announced shortly. The Sedition fest includes a small cinemateque season showing hits from the Sydney Filmmakers’ Co Op and commercial features of the period. A group of Australia’s greatest filmmakers will discuss what really happened in the ‘70s.
Johnny Allen will coordinate a cabaret season at the State Library of NSW that includes the legendary absurdist troupe Funny Stories as well as burlesque legend Elizabeth Burton and a contemporary burlesque performance coordinated by Vashti Hughes and Tim Hansen.
Sedition 2019: an exciting partnership between the City of Sydney, the Power Institute, the State Library of NSW, the Oxford Arts Factory, the National Art School and Brand X Productions.
