What does it mean to restore a film and what histories come back with it?

At Cinema Reborn 2026, one program we’re especially drawn to is “Tell No Lies” a rare chance to experience African cinema in its restored form on the big screen.

Bringing together the work of Sarah Maldoror (Angola/France) and Flora Gomes (Guinea-Bissau), this program centres African anti-colonial storytelling.

Maldoror’s Festa trilogy (1979-1980) observes and insists — grounded in liberation struggles and lived realities.

Gomes’ Mortu Nega (1988) expands that history into something epic, intimate, and deeply rooted in the aftermath of independence.

Sydney: May 1–10 (Ritz Cinema)
Melbourne: May 8–17 (Lido Cinema)

There was something special in these rooms.

Each day brought its own energy, moments of connection, curiosity, and shared experience.

We felt it everyday, and we’ll carry that with us.

This is what it looks like when stories find their audience. #

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our Sydney-based MC is no longer able to join us.

We’re incredibly grateful to have Melbourne’s own step in and in doing so, the city has shown up for us once again.

Poni Tongun is a South Sudanese-Australian leader, educator, and dynamic MC known for her ability to connect deeply with community and hold space with purpose.

With over 15 years in nursing across acute and community care, and now a lecturer at Victoria University, Poni’s work has always centred on people — particularly those navigating barriers to access and opportunity.

A respected voice within the African Australian community, she has led and contributed to initiatives that uplift young people, women, and underserved communities. Many will recognise her from the African Music and Cultural Festival and Africa Day Australia, where her presence continues to shape powerful, inclusive spaces.

We’re proud to have Poni guide us through Opening Night at AFFA Melbourne.
