It’s hard to top a good long browse at a bookshop. So many new titles stocked each day. Pop in and see what you find. Or, better yet, see what book finds you.

If there was any question how our evening with Alan Joyce would go, the brilliant journalist Deb Snow answered the moment the interview started.

As a small independent bookshop, we continue to be amazed by the caliber of authors, journalists, panelists and guests our events attract.

Last night was no exception. We witnessed an electric conversation between Snow and Joyce covering all aspects of Joyce’s life growing up in tenement housing in Dublin to his rise (and fall) as the CEO of Qantas. Money was discussed and debated, apologies were delivered but Joyce did not back down from the decisions he made at the time, which he passionately believes saved Qantas and firmly secured its future for decades to come.

Our engaged audience sprung with questions and criticism, indeed, some praise. It was a night to remember.

Alan Joyce was keen to share that all proceeds from his book go to three causes close to his heart:

The Pinnacle Foundation: Providing scholarships, mentoring, and support for young LGBTQIA+ Australians who’ve been rejected by families, facing homelessness.

Garvan Institute of Medical Research: Funds medical research including cancer research and early detection.

The Sydney Festival: Supporting arts and inclusivity.

Bookoccino Event: Myf Warhurst and Justine Cullen on Middle Rage

What a special evening we shared connecting over the truest of life’s emotions like love, exhaustion, ambition and RAGE.

Myf encouraged us to accept and embrace our anger, don’t suppress it, feel it. It’s there for a reason, and that reason is survival.

Ageing is a beautiful and wild thing. No need to be graceful about it — be loud, be seen and embrace that fire within.

And keep dreaming of those beautiful communes filled with our dearest friends as we age, singing karaoke, sharing meals, forest bathing and playing the bongos. Maybe not to bongos.

If you missed the talk, pop into the bookshop and grab a signed copy of Middle Rage by Myf Warhurst and Semi-Gloss by Justine Cullen.

We’re looking for a Senior Barista ☕️📚

We’re looking for an experienced, people-loving Senior Barista to join the team at Bookoccino in Avalon.

Alongside making great coffee and helping us continue Bookoccino’s tradition of serving some of Avalon’s best, you’ll take the lead in the day-to-day running of our café - from ordering coffee, milk and croissants to managing stock, reducing waste, maintaining quality and keeping an eye on the numbers.

Hospitality isn’t always easy, but we hold ourselves to a high standard - and we’re looking for someone who shares that approach.

For the right person, there’s also the opportunity to take on greater responsibility and grow into the management team.

Interested? We’d love to hear from you.

Liane Moriarty's new book, Big Little Truths, is already one of our bestsellers.

After all their big little lies, what happens next? The gang is back. Madeline is planning her 50th birthday party. Jane is happily married to Tom (isn't she?).

Celeste is haunted by memories of her dead husband, and troubled by her very alive mother-in-law. The kids are no longer kids. And things are falling apart. It's been ten years since Perry Wright fell from a balcony at the Pirriwee High trivia night but best friends Madeline, Celeste and Jane are still shadowed by his death. When an anonymous package containing a severed finger arrives at the school, and a man in a green Volvo is seen lurking around the kids, everyone is uneasy.

Is the finger pointing to a mystery, or even murder? A lie masquerading as the truth? Or a secret about to blow up their lives? What is clear is that the truth will always hurt someone.

Don't be the last to know what is happening in Pirriwee. Grab a copy in store or online: https://shop.bookoccino.com.au/p/big-little-truths

Fathers Day Gift Ideas at Bookoccino…

Father’s Day is always a lovely excuse to come and spend some time with us. Our neighbours at LJ Hookers, courtesy of Peter Robinson are shouting the first 30 dads who visit us for a coffee, and we’ll have brilliant local musicians Uncle Jimmy’s Band playing from 10am–12pm.

So bring Dad, bring the family, bring a book-loving friend - or simply come for a coffee and a wander through the shelves.

NEW EVENT: Bonfire of the Murdochs

Would you sacrifice your family for power? Would you choose money over love? Would you live your life differently if you knew the tragic ending?

Bonfire of the Murdochs is the epic true story behind the fight to control the world’s last great media dynasty and the toll it took on a family.

We are unbelievably lucky to have author and journalist Gabriel Sherman share with us the shocking details of hundreds of interviews he conducted with sources close to the Murdoch family.

It is a tragedy Shakespeare would have appreciated, where getting everything you want costs everything you love.

You won’t want to miss this event - tickets selling fast!

Gabe Sherman in conversation with Juanita Phillips
Date: Tuesday 6 October
Time: 6pm (doors open at 5.45)
Location: Avalon Beach Surf Club
Tickets: $55

Aren’t we lucky to have such wonderfully loyal friends (and neighbours) launch not one, but TWO books at Bookoccino. The first was ten years ago for Penguin the Magpie, and today, we hosted Sam and Cam Bloom once again, as they launched a new illustrative book written by Bradley Trevor Grieve and illustrated by Gabriel Evans, told from the perspective of the little Magpie chick about feeling broken, about the comfort of friendship and about resilience and love.

Everyone who purchases a copy of The Little Bird that Fell at Bookoccino between today and 15 September gets entered into a draw for a chance to win a beautiful archival print of Penguin the Magpie by Gabriel Evans(worth $250.)

Come on by and get a signed copy of the book in-store or order one online from our website.
