In South-Western Sydney, there is a large population of Vietnamese-Australians and it's not uncommon to see Vietnamese-Australians kicking the round ball in a park.

But it wasn’t until October 2020 that the first Vietnamese-Australian soccer club was established, despite a long tradition of the world game in Vietnam dating back to the late 19th century.

Inner West Counsel Football Club was established amidst the turbulence of 2020.

In only a short time it has set up two teams that have quickly cultivated a keenness for good football and good friendship.

ACU FC players have already begun their pre-season training for next year.

Having access to their own synthetic pitch has meant that they’re able to continue training rain, hail or shine (ok maybe not hail)… Look out 2023 👀

Introducing ACU FC club manager - Sonny Makko.

We sat down with Sonny and asked him a few questions about ACU FC. Have a read through what he had to say.

How long have you been the football manager for ACU FC?
I started with the club in our inaugural year, 2019. Officially came on board in November 2018 while completing our licensing agreement with CDSFA.

What is your favourite thing about working for ACU FC?
It was exciting to start with a clear canvas so building the club from scratch is a big advantage. Initially the club culture was our focal point. Our club culture is my favourite achievement.

What are your hopes for the future of ACU FC?
To consolidate our current teams. Moving forward, looking at adding more senior teams and introducing Junior and youth teams in the next few years.

What are you looking forward to for the 2023 season?
For a club that has only been around for four years, I feel we have had good success on the field and definitely good success off the field with our club culture. For 2023,
I want to build on our club culture by continuing to bring in good people & this will allow us to have continued success on the field.

In 2022 we have registered a higher percentage of female players, coaches & managers. May we also add that our president is a female too!

At Punchbowl United FC we have developed ways to accomodate females of all abilities, backgrounds and religions to make the world game more accessible and comfortable for more women to get involved.

Since our establishment we’ve taken a different direction in what a jersey means to us.

THE HISTORY: The Darug and Eora people were the original inhabitants of the Punchbowl area for many thousands of years before European settlement. Nearby Punchbowl are the river banks of Salt Pan Creek and George’s River which led into Cooks River & Botany Bay. Aboriginal occupation are found in local rock shelters which were used as cooking and camping places. Among the most important of the surviving Aboriginal artwork sites in Canterbury Bankstown is a rock shelter located at Undercliff, in the area of the Cooks River. We want to embed the importance of the history of our country and the indigenous community into our club, hence we’ve come up with a design that resembles just that.

THE MEANING: The black circles represent the land and the country. The circles and meeting circles on the body represent the tracks between land and water and links to communities. The circles on the sleeves represent all the generations of Aboriginal families and mobs past and present on the land and surrounding areas.

We want this jersey to stand as a reminder of our countries history AND also as a start to continue the education of the Indigenous heritage to our local community and those we come across.
