It is with great sadness that I share the passing of one of our dear artists, supporters, mentors and friends, Australian violist Simon Oswell.

Thanks to Barry Alsop for the capture of a legend.

Here are some of my favourite memories of Simon in performance and at the 2025 Long Listen Festival, shared with love and permission from his wife Bron and family.

Simon came into my life like a burst of sunshine. He was generous with his time, wisdom, encouragement and friendship. When things became difficult (as they inevitably do when delivering a festival!), Simon was always there with a coffee, a hug, advice and an unwavering belief in my vision.

Together with Bron, his wonderful wife, he opened their home for our very first festive fundraising house concert.

We hatched ideas, dreamed up projects and spoke about the importance of putting love into what you do. There was still so much more music we wanted to play together, for the joy of it. Simon and I shared a belief that music can change the world because it transforms us from the inside out.
I miss him deeply.

Simon brought warmth, kindness, generosity to every room, home and stage he entered. He was a musician of international distinction, performing with some of Australia’s and the world’s finest orchestras and chamber ensembles, yet remained endlessly humble, curious and supportive of others.

One of my most treasured memories is having Simon join our inaugural Festival Chamber Orchestra in 2025 and witnessing the joy he brought to our stage. His belief in what we were building meant more than he ever knew.

After the festival, Simon wrote: “I’m still on a high, Lulu, after an inspirational involvement in your Long Listen Festival... I have played in the great concert halls of the world, yet somehow this seemed so real, wonderful and impactful on our community.”

To Bron and the beautiful Oswell family, our hearts ♥️and deepest are with you.

Your legacy lives on in every musician fortunate enough to share a stage with you.

Rest peacefully, dear friend. I miss you. 🎻🖤

🎥✨Woohoo! Our festival highlights video just dropped 💥

Long Listen Festival 2025 lit up the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with bold music, deep listening, and extraordinary artistry.

From world premieres and small hall concert magic to festival conversations and morning meditations, this festival was one for the culture seekers and music lovers.

One of our festival’s core aims is to support and celebrate young talent both on stage and behind the scenes. This year we were thrilled to have Lara Lawson from Lens & Launch on our crew.

At just nineteen, she’s already making creative waves with her videography, and she captured so many incredible moments across Long Listen 2025 both at Palmwoods and at our closing Blues On The Range concert at .pub 🎥✨

Here’s a taste of what she’s created… and you’ll need to wait just a little longer before we drop her full-length festival wrap-up!
