As we gear up for the 43rd Nacra Nationals at Speers Point, it’s an ideal time to reflect on the enduring legacy of the Nacra brand in Australian 'One Design' catamaran racing. For over forty years, Nacra has been synonymous with not just top-quality racing catamarans but also with fostering a culture of loyalty and friendly rivalry. This long-standing tradition emphasises skill and fair competition, underlining why Nacra remains a beloved name in the Australian sailing community.
Our class maintains a set of 'Class Rules' and 'Measuring Guides' to ensure the boats we race are 'One Design'. In recent years, the manufacturer has introduced updates to the 5.0 and 5.8, modernising these great platforms. Noteworthy on the 5.8 is the Square-top main, 10:1 mainsheet system and the recently updated furling jib.
The furling jib has been a feature on the 4.5 and many other boats over the years and is now available on the 5.0 and 5.8. The Class Rules released in August 2022 also permit crews to furl their jib during a race, making the 5.8 a much safer boat for lighter crews in strong winds and greatly simplifying launching and beaching the boats in high winds.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Nacra Nationals at Speers Pt NSW 30th Dec 2023 to 5th Jan 2024.
