Introducing: Darkness in 589.

Explore behind the scenes of the ANAT + MAP mima Artist Residency + Commission โ€” where art and science meet.

Each year, the commission pairs artists and a scientist to build a new immersive artwork for MAP mima's 360-degree projection Cube.

In 2026, Peter Swanton (Gamilaraay astrophysicist), Prita Tina Yeganeh (Iranian multidisciplinary artist) and Georgia Hayward (Mardigan and Anglo-Celtic artist) took on a residency in a dark sky reserve, creating Darkness in 589 โ€” an immersive artwork exploring darkness as a vital ecological condition.

The work invites audiences to consider through their senses what darkness sustains and what is at risk of being lost due to light pollution.

Exhibition dates: Friday 25 September โ€“ Sunday 29 November 2026
Opening event: Friday 25 September 5โ€“7pm

Created by The Useless Assembly, a Northern Rivers-based group of artists of diverse ability, the exhibition brings an immersive new work to the 360-degree projection cube โ€” shaped by lived experience of neurodiversity, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia and other neurodivergent perspectives.
