SAILING THINGS — EPISODE 02: THE FORCE ARRIVES

Something strange was happening to sailing around the world.

Club fleets were getting smaller. State and National Championships were struggling to attract the numbers they once had. People who had spent years on the water were finding other things to do.

We could all see it but nobody could quite explain it.

But at the Capel Sound Invitational, something was different.

People turned up.

They were enthusiastic. They were excited. They raced, laughed, caught up with old mates and the banter was next level.

However, somewhere out beyond the horizon, beyond the Sapphire Banks, something was watching.

The Force had noticed the CSI.

And it was about to discover that these sailors weren’t going to be so easy to defeat.

The Battle for the Bar has just taken on a whole new meaning.

Welcome to SAILING THINGS, the Capel Sound Invitational comic series.

There’s a mysterious force and something strange is happening on and off the water.

Boats are disappearing.

Clubs are going quiet.

The car parks aren’t as full as they used to be.

The people who once couldn’t wait to get on the water are finding other things to do.

And nobody seems to know why.

But here at the CSI, there are still a few people who haven’t forgotten.

Sailors.
Paddlers.
Friends.
Wind.
Water.
Adventure.

They’ve noticed something.

Something is taking people from our sport.

Something doesn’t want us to sail.

But it picked the wrong bunch of people to target.

Over the next 12 weeks, we’ll follow the sailors of the Capel Sound Invitational as they uncover the strange forces working against our sport — and fight back the only way they know how.

By getting on the water.

By bringing their mates.

By racing.

By having fun.

By refusing to disappear.

This summer, the fight comes to the Capel Sound Invitational.

If you haven’t registered for the Australia Day Regatta at McCrae yet… you should.
The forecast is awesome, the best we’ve seen all season!
I’m not involved so it will stay awesome, there’s music and great people enjoying what this great country has to offer.
Everyone is welcome, even if you sail an A Class, they also accommodate your special needs. 😉
We are so privileged to do what we do, let’s not waste any opportunity to enjoy this unique Australian way of life.

For those not sailing or paddling in the Capel Sound Invitational now’s the time to sit down with your Cheese & Kabana, Piña Colada and listen.
Grab a pair of your favourite parachute pants and jump on your Redline with those sweet Tuffs and follow the fleet along the bay trail. That’s right, this isn’t an event just for the participants but for families too. Why should you be left out? It’s just not right. We keep the fleet as close to shore as possible so you can follow your loved ones up and down the CSI course!
You might be thinking, wow you’re not like a regular sailing event at all…and you’d be right. You’re about to witness moments that will ruffle some feathers, it will take time but it will be time well spent.
Watch this space, we are steeped in tradition but not limited by elitist ideologies.
Here comes the new dawn of sailing and ocean sports. Welcome aboard.

That’s right, it’s snowing in the North Pole, it’s cold but it’s not as cool as the Capel Sound Invitational, especially this year!
This edition isn’t just another regatta - it’s a full blown time warp. Neon sails, paddle power and big hair energy collide as we crank the dial back to the 80s, when mixed tapes were a currency, spandex was a weapon and the taipan was a dance move, not a catamaran.
If you’ve ever wanted to race like it’s 1985, now’s your shot…polish your sunnies, comb the mullet, slap some double “A”s in the Walkman and start planning now to join the ultimate throwback on water.
The website has had a slight refresh so hold on to your shoulder pads while we level up the 8-bit.
