A quick post from Bologna today. I got home too late after watching a 3D program feature Bugs Bunny in a Chuck Jones directed cartoon called LUMBER JACK RABBIT and then Roy Del Ruth's PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE. It packed out the Modernissimo at 10.00 pm

Andrew Pike of Ronin Films has launched a crowd funding initiative to raise money for the restoration of Solrun Hoaas’s first and only dramatic feature AYA. The link to the Australian Cultural Fund site can be found at the end of this text.

Solrun was a good friend of a number of the people involved in the annual presentation of Cinema Reborn and we are very happy to draw attention to Andrew’s initiative. AYA was well-received at a number of international film festivals and it has drawn praise from Amree Hewitt writing about the film in Filmnews on its debut in 1991 and re- published in a Senses of Cinema dossier in 2010 following Solrun’s untimely death in December 2009.

“Aya (1990), the debut feature for writer/director Solrun Hoaas, is a richly textured portrait of a young Japanese woman (played by Eri Ishida) in the Australia of the fifties and sixties. Constructed around a series of vignettes from her life (spanning two decades and starting with Aya newly arrived and recently married), the film – which follows her, her husband Frank (Nicholas Eadie), and ex-army member of the Australian forces deployed in postwar Japan and their mutual friend Mac (Chris Haywood) – is an engaging, complex exploration of personal strength and cultural differences.”

AYA is a fine film which warrants restoration and one hopes that this crowd funding plan will allow the film to find new and appreciative audiences.

A tribute to Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami. A special screening of The Traveller by our friends at the Persian Film Festival Australia.

This July marks ten years since the passing of Abbas Kiarostami, one of the most important filmmakers of the twentieth century and a towering figure in world cinema.

To mark the anniversary, Persian Film Festival Australia, in partnership with UNSW School of Arts and Media, invite you to a tribute screening of his debut feature, THE TRAVELLER (1974).

This screening is presented as part of CineCircle program, PFFA’s special screening initiative.
