SENTIENT returns to Sydney cinemas

After making its Australian Premiere at Antenna, we’re delighted to see Tony Jones’ powerful documentary SENTIENT returning to the big screen.

Join director Tony Jones for two special Q&A screenings:

📍 Dendy Newtown — Wednesday 19 August
📍 Ritz Cinemas, Randwick — Thursday 20 August

SENTIENT takes audiences behind the locked doors of animal research laboratories, exploring the complex relationships between researchers and the animals in their care.

At the centre of the film is Dr Lisa Jones-Engel, a highly decorated primatologist whose decades of work with chimpanzees and monkeys ultimately led her to question the very foundations of her profession.

It’s a confronting, deeply human documentary that asks a difficult question: can we still justify harming animals — and ourselves — in the name of science?

We were proud to give SENTIENT its Australian Premiere at Antenna, and are thrilled to see it now reaching wider audiences.

Four Australian feature documentaries have been selected to take part in Antenna Documentary Film Festival's 7th Rough Cut Lab. Supported by Screen NSW and Screen Australia, the two-day workshop is designed to support filmmakers at the final stage of editing, providing creative, editorial and storytelling guidance, while helping identify new pathways to reach international audiences.

Antenna Documentary Film Festival has opened applications for the sixth edition of its Rough Cut Lab, with the next crop of participants to receive guidance from Impact Partners executive director Jenny Raskin, filmmaker and cinematographer Kirsten Johnson, and New Zealand-based editor Simon Price.

12th PERSIAN FILM FESTIVAL AUSTRALIA STARTS TODAY! In its 12th edition, Persian Film Festival Australia returns with a program drawn directly from the living reality of Iranian and Persian-speaking cinema. Films made under pressure, in defiance, and with the purpose of resilience.

The 12th PFFA opens with Cutting Through Rocks, an Oscar-nominated documentary about the first Iranian woman elected as a rural village councilwoman, and closes with Sunshine Express, a debut allegorical thriller exposing the mechanics of authoritarian complicity through a sinister fake game show with a full programme of features and short films competing for the Golden Gazelle Award in between.
