League Queensland - More than the Foley Shield

League Queensland - More than the Foley Shield “More than the Foley Shield” tells the story of more than 300 players and officials that had a hand in the 100 year rise of Rugby League in NQ.

No book before has captured the history of the rugby league in North Queensland like “More than the Foley Shield”. The book tells the story of more than 300 players and officials that has a hand in the 100 year rise and development of the game in the north of Australia. The stories of the great international teams that toured the North like the 1928, 1936 and 1946 Great Britain sides, the magnific

ent 1951 and 1955 Frenchmen who thrilled the crowds in Townsville and Cairns. The book is not only about the games - it captures the great players from Ola Olsen from Charter Towers who played six games for Queensland in 1908 through to our current North Queensland super-star, Johnathan Thurston. No region or town misses out with more than 400 photos, many never seen before, of teams and players from Sarina in the south, Thursday Island in the north and Mount Isa in the west. The book written in chronological order tells about the great North Queensland team that supplied nine Queensland players in 1915 and also tells about the success of the North Queensland Cowboys, Mackay Cutters and Northern Pride. The great games are mentioned in details like the 110 minute marathon in 1982 when Townsville and Herbert River fought out a 22/22 draw, the 100 minute Carlton Shield final in 1938 when Cairns and Townsville drew and the great effort from the 1962 Far North Queensland team in Cairns who went down to a magnificent Great Britain team 33/31. This touring team had beaten all corners including Australia. “More than the Foley Shield” tells all. Don’t miss out on this great piece of North Queensland history.

Isssue #35 preview 🏉 The news in April that Michael Morgan had played his last game for the Cowboys probably never came as a surprise to those who have seen him struggle over the last couple of seasons but gee, the Cowboys, Queensland, Australia and a legion of fans will miss him.

Morgan was an outstanding rugby league player and model citizen from the first day he laced on a boot and in 50 years time people will still remember the 2015 NRL Grand Final and Morgan’s final run that set up the game defining try for Kyle Feldt.

The young player who won a Confraternity Shield with Ignatius Park College in Townsville would go onto play 12 games for Australia, 12 games for Queensland and 168 first grade games for his beloved Cowboys and I would not be out of place to say that Michael Morgan playing beside Johnathan Thurston was the finest half-back that ever played in North Queensland.

Let us know your thoughts or favourite Morgan moment below..

[Down Memory Lane]
Back in December I received a request for some information John ‘Bluey’ Higginson. You can read about his remarkable rugby league life in the latest issue of League Queensland (LQ) magazine.

He played in the golden era of regional rugby league in Qld when many Internationals and Qld players plied their trade in places like Barcaldine, Babinda and Bowen. There was work everywhere and a good player could make more money in Babinda than Brisbane. Bluey was a great player in his own right and I’ve included his long list of his impressive statistics in my LQ story.

For those who knew Bluey Higginson it would come as no surprise that he had an honour roll of achievements and he passed on his knowledge to hundreds if not thousands of young rugby league players in the Whitsunday area.

Bluey Higginson was a great rugby league player, a great coach and a great story teller but more to the point a great character and rugby league needs people like him to keep the game in perspective. Rest in Peace, Bluey, it was great to know you.

What are your thoughts on a 4th NRL team in Queensland? We look into this battle in our current issue of League Queensland magazine.

The thought has sparked a lot of interest and my comment to the powerbrokers in the NRL is to listen to the fans and common sense. A ‘Bird in the Hand’ is a good solid saying so strong juniors, resolute fans, a good business plan, strong cash balance and a leadership group that loves the game should be the bare essentials to be considered. Maybe we should look back at the last time clubs were admitted to the NRL competition. It was 1995 and one club was on the agenda but when the smoke had settled the powerbrokers admitted the North Queensland Cowboys and the South Queensland Crushers! Maybe history might repeat itself and we end up with an 18-team competition and five Queensland NRL teams, why not! The only opposition to this would be the Sydney based clubs who cannot get a crowd for love or money. Why hold expansion back because of them.
