⚠️CUTTLEFISH UPDATE 2025⚠️

We know what’s been circulating the media. We’ve seen the tumby bay post, and we’ve been keeping a very close eye on the algal bloom updates that DEW has been posting. We want to put your fears to rest, so let’s talk about some of the questions we’ve gotten this season, and the answers to them based on fact.

🐙Q:Why has the season been so late?

A: Cuttlefish come to Stony Point in the wintertime because their eggs incubate in cold water. They only start to come in once the water temperature drops below about 17 degrees-as of a week ago, the water temp was still at 19. Luckily, the water temperature has just cooled down to 15, and we’re already starting to see them move in!

🐙Q: What about the algae bloom?

A:We’ve been watching the reports very carefully, and there have been no reports of the bloom in the Spencer gulf. With water temps dropping as it is, we are confident that it will not impact our beautiful ecosystem.

🐙Q: Were the cuttlefish that washed up at Tumby the population that appears in Whyalla?

A: There is no evidence that suggests that the cuttlefish that washed up in Tumby are our giant Australian cuttlefish that aggregate in Whyalla for the season. We are eagerly waiting to hear from PIRSA, but we have reasonable evidence to assume that our population is separate from other populations of Giant Australian Cuttlefish, and will be unaffected.

The countdown is on – Salty 'Sea'esta returns!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 7 from 12pm to 8pm at the Ada Ryan Gardens, because Salty ‘Sea’esta is returning with a full day of fun — and this year, the good times will keep rolling with an extra day of celebrations at Salty Sunday on Sunday, June 8 from 10am-1pm at Rotary Park down at the Whyalla Foreshore.

What to expect:

Roving performers and pop-up activities

Market stalls with crafts and local goods
Food and beverage vendors
Free return bus service thanks to Des’s Transport (for Saturdays Salty ‘Sea’esta event only)
