National commemorative Service

Between 2001 and 2021, more than 35,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel were deployed to operations in Afghanistan and the wider Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO) in support of Afghanistan. On 11 September 2001, a series of terrorist attacks took place in the United States (US). Almost 3,000 people from more than 80 countries lost their lives, which had a profound impact around the world.

On Sunday 11 October 2026, DVA will hold a national commemorative service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to mark the 25th anniversary of Australian service in Afghanistan.

If you or someone you know is attending, please register in-person attendance through the DVA website at https://www.dva.gov.au/recognition-and-commemoration/commemoration-services/commemorative-services-in-australia/25th-anniversary-of-australian-service-in-afghanistan-2001-2021

For those unable to attend in person, the service will be broadcast live on the ABC.
