Sydney Underground Film Festival 2026: MINESHAFT: THE CRUISING MURDERS

When William Friedkin’s Cruising hit cinemas in 1980, it sparked massive outrage and fierce protests across the q***r community. But the real-life story that inspired it is even more compelling.

Fresh from Tribeca and Frameline, Emmy-winning documentarian Jeffrey Schwarz (I Am Divine, Vito) dives deep into New York’s underground leather scene and the 1977 murder of journalist Addison Verrill in Mineshaft: The Cruising Murders.

The 2026 Q***r Screen Emerging Narrative Feature Competition Winner: TEST, directed by Sam McConnell, with a cash prize of $2500 AUD.

This year’s jury comprised Sydney-based writer and director Craig Boreham (Teenage Kicks, Lonesome), prolific Australian writer and director Alice Maio Mackay (The Serpent’s Skin, Our Effed Up World), and Ing Deickman, head of programming at Golden Age Cinema and founder of Pink Flamingo Cinema.

Jury Statement: “A well-realised and authentically told character study with a distinct point of view. We haven’t seen another film quite like Test.”

🏆 A huge congratulations to this year’s Q***r Screen Pitch Off winner: Sam Carson for FLOODCAM!

Sam takes home the $10,000 cash prize from Q***r Screen to produce the short film, along with $5,000 in post-production services generously supported by Spectrum Films !
