Becoming a Muslim is easy – you just say the Shahada (testimony of faith): I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger…and you’re in! But actually choosing to become a Muslim, especially in the West today, is not so easy. It can, in fact, present unique challenges.

Meet Barbara, Stephanie, Rima, Johnae, and Eli as they share what it’s really like to become Muslim in the modern West — the doubts, the peace, and the power of belief.

🎬 So You Want to Be a Muslim will be screened soon on 23rd of November 2025.

Some of you might have watched or read about this film but today, we want to share something more personal: the Director’s Statement behind What Will People Say?

“As a Muslim girl myself, Gulnaz’s story resonates deeply with my own experiences of societal pressure and cultural expectations. Through her journey, I find solace and inspiration in her relentless pursuit of breaking free from the constraints imposed by society.

Gulnaz’s unwavering determination to challenge the boundaries around her serves as a constant source of encouragement for me. Not only does she use her voice to bring about change within the confines of her studio, but she actively engages in finding solutions to the challenges she faces while recording her show. Her resilience and optimism, often accompanied by her infectious smile, offer hope even in the most difficult of circumstances.

In our conversations, I sense her fervent desire to create change — yet also her moments of doubt and vulnerability. These moments remind me of the complexities we all face in our shared journey toward freedom and self-expression.

Through voices like Gulnaz’s, I hope to highlight the invaluable contributions of women in our society — especially in times marked by division and misunderstanding. By amplifying these stories, we can remind ourselves of the power of courage, empathy, and connection.”

🎥 Screening soon on 23rd of November 2025.
