Big Al's Poker Run

Big Al's Poker Run Big Al's Poker Run was an annual hot rod car show held in Perth Western Australia for 37 yrs. Big Al passed on June 2nd 2016 and the show is now closed.

History

In an all-but-forgotten corner of the Frankston Caravan Park in Victoria can be found the birthplace of WA’s most famous hot rodding event. Nestled amidst the weeds and long grass is the very caravan within which Al Erdman and Eric Warren, after participating in the Confederates Rod & Custom Club Poker Run of 1980 and armed with little else besides a pencil, some beer and an out-of-date P

erth street directory pulled from the clutter on the back seat, created the very first Big Al’s Poker Run. Soon after their return to the west coast, the inaugural Run was held. On that second Saturday in February 1981, entrants paid $5 to enter and cruised from the Carousel Shopping Centre carpark to the finish at Bernie’s Drive-in Hamburger Bar on Riverside Drive where the judging was done by Mal Hardwick. Eight trophies were given away that night, amongst them Top Street Rod which was won by John Hyde’s ’39 Ford Sloper and Top Street Machine awarded to Lee Weir’s Pontiac. History doesn’t record who won the Joker prize of a monster-steak barbecue pack. That first Poker Run attracted 52 entrants. Three decades years later, it takes a staff of 90 just to man the event. The Run has grown to a size where it demands nine months worth of organising, involves numerous government departments and attracts a growing list of sponsors. For many years, the annual Poker Run video guaranteed worldwide exposure of the event and encouraged an ever-increasing number of entrants, culminating in a record 850 vehicles in 2001. And while still based around hot rods and vehicles of American origin, the Poker Run has invited over the years clubs such as the Holden Car Club, GT Falcon Club, Austin Healey Club and Bolwell Owners to add a colourful diversity to the event. In response to growing numbers, a pre-entry system was introduced in 2002 and proved to be immediately popular. Quite simply, an entrant registers prior to the event and is issued a number and an identifying windscreen sticker. On the day of the Run, those who have pre-entered need only check-in through the pre-entry lane, thereby negating long queues and the risk of boiling radiators. In 2013, the location of the day event changed from the Burswood Park site to the Taylor Reserve in Taylor Street, Victoria Park. Although the venue incurs higher costs from the Town of Victoria Park, we have a much larger event field which will lend itself to having several reserved areas to allocate to specialist car clubs and Marques, something we have been asked for by many clubs over the years. This move has increased our event field from 2.5 to 7 hectares. Contrary to popular belief, the Run is no longer planned from an old street directory. Using the latest edition of the UBD however is no guarantee that instructions won’t confuse left with right and lead entrants astray along the MNDR to the RAB before turning into the OTLK. And as for Casey Jones, keep an eye on the boom gates! After all, it wouldn't be the Poker Run without one major 'cock-up' in the directions, now would it.

Today, we remember Big Al, who would have turned 75 this year. Ten years ago this coming tuesday, we lost him.

But his spirit still roars in every V8 engine and every gleam of chrome in Western Australia.

From 1981 to 2016, Big Al ran the legendary Big Als Poker Run which gave countless hot rod, classic and American car lovers a place to call home. His passion, his vision, and his community live on in every spark of those classic rides.

Rest in power and thank you Big Al.

BIG AL’S BREAKFAST IS ON.

Hi everyone, we have received several messages asking if Big Al’s Breakfast is still going ahead in view of the weather forecasts.

The answer is a resounding YES. We will be there…

Valley Social has a great event arena with UNDERCOVER seating and tables which can accommodate 300 people. They have crafted a menu for us and have additional coffee machines to provide a swift service.

We will have a merch desk selling what we have left from the 2017 ‘One more time for Big Al’ Poker Run. The list includes t-shirts, key rings, car stickers and limited edition signs.

We are hoping for another accurate weather forecast like we had today.
A brilliant sunny day, I even saw a Mustang convertible on the Hwy with his top down.

However today’s BOM forecast was fronted by an image of a black cloud with rain, the words said 75% chance of 8mm. They were not wrong, it did rain but not 75% of the day. If it does rain, we will be under cover.

Now we understand you might not want to bring your t-bucket to the show n shine, so if you prefer come in your daily drive have a great breakfast, meet old friends, support Variety and remember our old mate Big Al.

See you there.

Very happy to report that we have found a venue for Big Al’s breakfast 2026.

This year Al would have turned 75 and if he was still with us, we are sure he would still be organizing his fabulous Poker Run. This year would have been his 45th.

Many of his long time supporters will be meeting up for breakfast on Sunday 31st May to remember those days and to celebrate Al’s memory with all the old cars and hot rods he loved and at the same time, raise some cash for W.A. children. This year we are raising money for Variety children’s charity W.A.

Remember Big Al‘s rules for vehicle eligibility. Any car, pick up, Ute, van, motorcycle or hack. Any condition just so long as it’s built prior to 1978 and is legal for the road.

Fantastic response to the idea of having another Big Al’s Breakfast - over 100 👍 in 3 days. Thank you all.

So we will start looking for a venue and a breakfast provider immediately.

It was also great to see so many of your names from the Big Al days. He would have been very embarrassed and touched by that.

I’ll be back in touch at the end of February with an update of the details.

Meanwhile you have only 1 thing to do.

Put Monday 1st June (WA Day) in your calendar. 8:30 gate open. Cruise at 11:00.

If you are building or rebuilding a steel bumper - - pull your finger out - - you have less than 5 months !
