The East Gippsland Lakes Open Water Swim Challenge

The East Gippsland Lakes Open Water Swim Challenge To swim the open waters of the E.G. Lakes system for 20kms, to raise funds towards an open water swim program for the children of E.G. Event: 22 Feb 2015.

Hi my name is Chris I am a 41 year old mum of two little red heads, a 6 year old girl and a 7year old boy. I manage a home based Bowen Therapy business in Paynesville called Natural Health Balance. When I first moved to Paynesville I found myself sitting at the shores of the lakes wondering if it was possible to swim from Nungurner to Paynesville 20km. I started swimming small distances to get a f

eel for the lakes system. As my distance increased I spent many hours contemplating the reasons and the driving force behind swimming this challenge. I am passionate about the water as a mother and the logistics of living by the lakes I wanted to commence an open water safety and survival program for the children of East Gippsland. Through my experience of swimming in the lakes I have found many variables such as strong winds, waves currents, whirlpools, dramatic weather changes in short periods, cold, jellyfish and other sea creatures to name a few. Currently the children of East Gippsland learn water safety at the pool. But would your child know what to do if caught in a current? I want to give children the knowledge and skills to understand the beauty and the dangers of the lakes where they live and play. Working with the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre (BARC) as well as the Lakes Aquatic and Recreation Centre (LARC) an open water swim and survival program has been devised with the objectives:
*What they need to be aware of- dangers, depth
*What needs to be changed-where should they swim and why?
*How environmental factors can alter and what they need to do to balance this- weather, tides. If you would like more information on this program please contact. Marilyn Fulford (BARC) (03) 5152 5710
Jennifer Whelan (LARC) (03) 5155 3333

So sad to hear about this drowning at Sunset Cove Paynesville also a mother drowning in Lake Victoria recently. My condolences to both families. I will be speaking on ABC Gippsland radio tommorow about the importance of being vigilant in the Lakes looking after yourself and your children.

A man drowns after getting into difficulty while swimming with his wife and family, in Victoria's sixth drowning in the space of a week.

Not long til Tom is in Lakes to start 135km swim.
