Hi my name is Chris I am a 41 year old mum of two little red heads, a 6 year old girl and a 7year old boy. I manage a home based Bowen Therapy business in Paynesville called Natural Health Balance. When I first moved to Paynesville I found myself sitting at the shores of the lakes wondering if it was possible to swim from Nungurner to Paynesville 20km. I started swimming small distances to get a f
eel for the lakes system. As my distance increased I spent many hours contemplating the reasons and the driving force behind swimming this challenge. I am passionate about the water as a mother and the logistics of living by the lakes I wanted to commence an open water safety and survival program for the children of East Gippsland. Through my experience of swimming in the lakes I have found many variables such as strong winds, waves currents, whirlpools, dramatic weather changes in short periods, cold, jellyfish and other sea creatures to name a few. Currently the children of East Gippsland learn water safety at the pool. But would your child know what to do if caught in a current? I want to give children the knowledge and skills to understand the beauty and the dangers of the lakes where they live and play. Working with the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre (BARC) as well as the Lakes Aquatic and Recreation Centre (LARC) an open water swim and survival program has been devised with the objectives:
*What they need to be aware of- dangers, depth
*What needs to be changed-where should they swim and why?
*How environmental factors can alter and what they need to do to balance this- weather, tides. If you would like more information on this program please contact. Marilyn Fulford (BARC) (03) 5152 5710
