Next month, we are proud to present Wakka Wakka, Ngugi and Birrpai choreographer Ngioka Bunda-Heath's latest work Estuary at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.

This moving duet explores a dual identity of saltwater and freshwater, and First Nation connection to the land, the sky and the waterways, and features dancers Jackie Sheppard (Tagalaka, Dagalag) and Brooklyn Bond (Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Latji Latji).

7 Dances for 7 People continues an evolving collaboration between choreographer Trà Mi Dinh and composer, and sound designer Tilman Robinson.

Their creative partnership has spanned commissioned works including Seven Dances for Two People (Lucy Guerin Inc, 2024), Nhang Trầm Hương (Sydney Opera House, 2024), I’ll Carry It (Impact Festival, 2025) and Somewhere Between Ten and Fourteen (Sydney Dance Company, 2025).

“Working with Tilman is a constant conversation between sound and movement. He has an incredible ability to respond in the room, finding the textures and rhythms that the choreography is asking for. The soundscore has been woven into the work from the beginning,” says Trà Mi Dinh.

The number 7 has long carried a sense of mystery and wholeness - appearing across fables, religious texts, astronomy and science, and woven into symbolic systems across cultures.

“I have a playful and reverent affinity to the number…mostly around its symbolism as a representative of wholeness,” choreographer Trá Mi says.

In 7 Dances for 7 People, that fascination becomes ritual.

7 dancers—possessed by the union of the spiritual (3) and the physical (4)—move together in a hypnotic choreography of precision, endurance and devotion. What begins as an obsession with the number suddenly transforms into a shared physical experience: 7 bodies, 1 collective rhythm, reaching toward something whole.

7 Dances for 7 People expands on choreographer Trá Mi Dinh’s Seven Dances for Two People, originally commissioned by Lucy Guerin Inc ➡for the 2024 Pieces program.
This new work invites us to enter an imagined world—this time, with more bodies, and more possibilities.

Reflecting on the original work, she says,

“Falling back into a world that is shifting and slippery and mysterious and obsessive is a big draw card. The duet felt like an invitation to imagine the world, and this expansion allows me to dive into the depths of it. Working with so many incredible artists is a rare gift, so I’m lapping it up.”

“Choreographically, I’m interested in how the body interacts with a 7/8 time signature and exploring complex and layered patterning through repetition and manipulation of time.”
