Free Entry Open Mic at The Townie

Free Entry Open Mic at The Townie Free Entry was an open mic held at The Townie in Newtown (326 King St) every Wednesday night, it is not currently active. Get in touch and we’ll go from there.

Free Entry is a weekly showcase of local music consisting of solo and duo performers for the first half of the evening and bands for the second. We book performers of all genres and experience and are always looking for more acts – if you want to play send us an email ([email protected]) telling us what type of act you are (solo/duo/band), the name of your act and which Wednesday you'd

like to play. Set times are allocated by the promoters, please do not ask for a specific time. All are welcome; we are interested in both music and non-standard acts (e.g. comedy, Spoken word, Vaudeville, Magic) and will put anything on so long as it fits within the timeslot and within our venues limitations. Free Entry runs from 7-11pm every Wednesday night at The Town Hall Hotel in Newtown which is right next to Newtown station and has a great stage and sound system, not to mention a regular crowd. Solo and duo performances are 15 minutes from 7-9pm; bands take over from 9pm with 30 minute slots each. For the bands we provide a partial backline – a drum kit (BYO cymbals and snare) and bass amp; guitar amps are BYO but sharing is highly encouraged.

Hello, checking in again! Still no news on the return of open mic I'm afraid. Some of you have noticed the Great Southern Nights gigs being advertised at The Townie over this month and naturally have been sending enquiries about other gigs, unfortunately the Great Southern Nights shows are all we have going so far. The regular four night a week program the venue had pre-covid is just not viable at the moment, I'm trying to get some sort of weekday thing happening but it will not be this year unless we manage to secure some external funding to put these events on.

If you'd like to do something to help the bigger picture for live music in NSW please consider sending a letter to your MP with the web form organised by MusicNSW below - it's easy, takes a couple of minutes. There's also a petition on that site you should sign if you haven't already.

This is really easy – the email is already written for you. Two steps: Step 1. Put in your full name, email address and your suburb. Under your suburb will appear your suburb and postcode. Click on your suburb and postcode and hit NEXT. Step 2. The letter will come up – please read and […]

Hello, hope you're well. Just checking in re: open mic - we're still off for the forseeable future unfortunately. The Townie like many venues is not pulling in the revenue to pay for live music at the moment but you can help by signing this petition to the NSW government to provide a rescue package for NSW venues akin to the Victorian effort: https://www.sosnsw.org/

In other news, if you're in a band that still wants to rehearse at the moment, check out Sound Hole in Marrickville - this is something I am just starting up, it is still very barebones but it's cheap as!

Just a quick update as a few people have been asking, unfortunately we still have no word on music starting up again at The Townie and don't expect it to happen until at least the 4sqm per person restriction is removed.

I know other venues are doing some shows and that's great; different circumstances here unfortunately, it's not a venue we can adapt to a ticketed model like some have.

Hopefully you're all out there still writing and practising, we will be back one day and I'll let you know here when it happens!

Unfortunately I got the call a couple of hours ago to say that with everything going on all live music at The Townie has been suspended until further notice, so for the time being our open mic has to stop.

I'll update the page when any future opportunities arise.

In the meantime I'm suddenly out of work and keen for anything going! If you were using open mic to get yourself a demo recorded or your set filmed I can still help you with that - for instance at a rehearsal studio or other locations. I do offer other services outside of the Townie including equipment and cable repair, freelance mixing etc. You can reach me through [email protected], or message through this page.
