A remarkable New Norfolk legacy on the river

Reading old newspaper reports on Trove has been a timely reminder of just how significant the New Norfolk Regatta’s contribution to the town once was - not only as an event, but as a community builder.

In the early 20th century, regatta committees worked over many years to raise funds through events, subscriptions and public support. With the cooperation of Derwent Valley Council, those funds were then used to purchase riverside land from local farmers, securing what we now know as the Esplanade for permanent public use.

This wasn’t accidental or symbolic - it was a deliberate effort to protect access to the river for recreation, gatherings and future generations. Council support helped make the transfer possible, but it was community fundraising and volunteer commitment that drove it.

Today, the Esplanade remains one of New Norfolk’s most valued public spaces. That achievement stands as a genuine and lasting legacy of the old regatta committees - a reminder of what local initiative, cooperation and pride in place can accomplish.
