It is with great sadness that we note the passing of our own local 'theatre royalty' - Joan Benson - who died earlier in September aged 93. Joan lived in Maleny and was still very actively involved in the SSC theatre scene until recent years, when poor health saw her move to Glasshouse Views aged care at Beerwah. Though tiny in stature, Joan was a large and unforgettable presence - even in the largest of crowds. We thank Joan for the great theatrical enrichments she brought to our communities through her tireless work.

"For in that sleep of death what dreams may come." Shakespeare.

RIP Joan Benson.

Queensland Theatre joins the arts community this week in marking the passing of our foundation board member, Joan Whalley OAM. An actress, teacher, director, mentor and artistic director of Twelfth Night Theatre from 1962 – 1976, Joan was also a highly regarded NIDA lecturer and taught the likes of Judith McGrath, Sigrid Thornton and Carol Burns.

A major force in the Queensland performing arts sector, Joan oversaw the building of the Twelfth Night Theatre complex, directed the Lord Mayor’s Christmas pantomimes and was Director of the Eastern Region of the Queensland Arts Council for many years.

Joan was also a staunch advocate for the important role theatre plays in society. Upon a successful Supreme Court appeal against a charge of ‘the use of offensive material’ in a 1966 Twelfth Night Theatre production, Joan observed that “Theatre belongs to the people, and symbolises the feelings and actions of the people. If theatre is to be a true picture of humanity, actors must be able to say what is said in true life, and in the circumstances of life.”

Vale Joan Whalley OAM. Our thoughts are with all who knew and treasured her.
