Merrijig Rodeo

Merrijig Rodeo Since 1976, Merrijig Rodeo has been more than an event, it’s a tradition rooted in the spirit of the High Country. In 2027, we’re celebrating our 51st rodeo.

Don’t just watch history - be part of it!

Mayor Cr Steve Rabie and Deputy Mayor Cr James Tehan recently attended the Merrijig Rodeo Presentation Night, following a record‑breaking 50th anniversary event in 2026 that welcomed over 5,000 attendees.
A highlight of the evening was seeing the Rodeo Committee distribute record profits back to the local community groups who make this much‑loved event possible - an incredible outcome for the region.

𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗯 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹
It's with heavy hearts that we write this tribute to our mate, Vice President, and long‑time committee member, Robert “Choppy” Purcell.

A true Merrijig legend, Choppy was one of the local larrikins who helped get the Merrijig Rodeo off the ground back in 1976. For five decades, he poured his heart and soul into this event and our community. His commitment wasn’t just dedication - it was love. Love for the rodeo, for the people who built it, and for the generations who have come to cherish it.

Choppy was as sharp as they come, and brought a dry sense of humour to every committee meeting - often at exactly the moment we needed it. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He worked hard. He cared deeply.

Merrijig Rodeo wouldn’t be what it is today without him. His legacy will live on in every arena fence, every hard‑won success, and every story told around the grounds and at The Hunt Club.

We'll miss you, Chop.
Rest easy mate - hope there’s plenty of cold ###X Gold up there for you.

If the smiles on this bus are anything to go by… getting to the rodeo is half the fun!

The team from Busfleet nailed it again last Saturday, carrying record numbers of happy rodeo fans from all over the district. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to keep our rodeo moving!

Thank you, Busfleet Mt Buller, for being the dream transport team!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱! From start to finish, you brought the energy and turned McCormack Park into something electric.

Our announcers, Matt Burns and Glass, were on fire - and our cowboys, cowgirls, pickup men, bullfighters, and four‑legged athletes all delivered performances worthy of a 50th anniversary celebration.

Thank you to everyone who came out, cheered, danced, sang, competed, volunteered, or supported in any way. You helped make this milestone rodeo one we won’t forget in a hurry.

Tonight’s spotlight shines on a family who have been with us almost from the beginning - the Borg family from Tradeflex, celebrating an extraordinary 29‑year
partnership with our rodeo.

Their long‑standing support has helped shape our event into what it is today. For the Borgs, Merrijig isn’t just a date on the calendar - it’s a treasured family tradition and a highlight of their year.

We’re so grateful for your loyalty and excitement, John, and we look forward to welcoming you, Jazzmin, Lachie and Tom back to McCormack Park on 7th March.

We’re proud to have Charles Wilcox behind the Merrijig Rodeo once again! For the past three years, Charles has created our iconic T‑shirt designs and supported the event with true community spirit. 👏🐎

What makes Charles special isn’t just his creativity - it’s his passion for bringing people together and supporting the Mansfield region. From collecting driftwood in remote Far North Queensland to transforming it into stunning sculptures right here at home, his work is as unique as his adventures.

🎨 He’s also been busy restoring a beautiful 1890s building on High Street, now home to his brand‑new gallery, The Art of Adventure. Doors officially open March 28, just in time for Easter!

If you love art, storytelling and a bit of adventure, make sure you follow Charles on Instagram - or pop into the gallery and say g’day.

Thanks for being part of the Merrijig Rodeo family, Charles! 🤠💛
