Meet the speaker 📣 Adam Greenspan -

🔹Adam Greenspan, FASLA, is a landscape architect and Design Director at PWP Landscape Architecture in Berkeley, California. His presentation for the ALC is titled: 'Living Landscape - Integrating Nature in Urban Technology' ..
Adam Greenspan (USA).

With degrees in sociology, installation art and a background in horticulture, Adam’s work aims to bring the wonder of life and the power of nature into people’s everyday experience through design. Adam grew up in the Hollywood Hills, spending his formative years hiking and playing in the wild lands of the Santa Monica Mountains. These experiences shaped his understanding of and interest in landscape and the interactions between people, plants, and animals. The drama of natural landscapes and the potential for shared insight through engagement with art have been key drivers in his practice.
At PWP, Adam has worked to integrate living systems holistically, and has focused on increasing the level of ecological service and the potential for engaged learning in all projects. Working with a wide array of clients, Adam and the team at PWP aim to create intimacy between people and the natural world within dramatic and memorable spaces in a wide variety of settings including Barangaroo Reserve, Jewel Changi Airport, Salesforce Transit Center Park, San Francisco, Glenstone Museum, Potomac, MD, and Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort, Singapore.

Meet the speaker 📣 Steve Martino - Landscape Architect. FALA

🔹 Steve Martino is a landscape architect based in Tucson, Arizona, who says that his career path was ‘a direct result of a walk in the desert’. He was puzzled why the manmade landscape of the city was so uninteresting and uninspiring compared with the natural desert landscape. So he decided to try and design gardens which incorporated native desert plants — the start of a 40-year career which has garnered international plaudits for its fusion of elegant modernism with the drama of succulents and other desert subjects. Martino was working ‘naturalistically’ with wild plants — considered almost as weeds — many years before it became fashionable in the mainstream, and his early contribution and example is internationally appreciated and understood.
In his talk, entitled ‘Modern materials & attitudes for old school gardens’, Steve will describe how he uses architectural elements to structure space and control views. He will discuss how gardens should stand on their own as spaces without plants, and how he came to realize that plants are incidental to the garden. Steve says his career-long observation is that landscaping is, ‘mostly a nature-hating activity that wastes resources and displaces useful habitat’. He will discuss designing responsible modern gardens using a few basic rules and design tools.

🔹Steve's presentation is titled: Walls and Weeds
