Opening tonight and running across the weekend, A Glitter Painting Show by RJ O'Connor brings together an archive of glitter paintings made across an evolving studio practice.

Glitter operates as both material and subject: excessive, seductive, synthetic and culturally loaded. Through accumulation, repetition and surface, the works explore the relationship between decoration and value, pleasure and critique, attraction and excess.

The paintings occupy an uncertain space between image and object, high and low culture, sincerity and irony.

Drawn from different moments of the artist’s practice, the archive reveals an ongoing fascination with glitter as a material capable of making visible the politics, desires and contradictions embedded within the decorative surface.

I am a Melbourne-based digital artist who began my art journey by creating handmade stickers and prints at home. For me, art has always been a form of therapy and self-expression. I’d say that art has helped me to express my u̶n̶h̶e̶a̶l̶t̶h̶y̶ ̶o̶b̶s̶e̶s̶s̶i̶o̶n̶ passion for animals and memes! I LOVE animals, especially birds!

My art is home to a colourful cast of slightly unhinged bird friends. They’re a little awkward, a lot of fun and bursting with personality! With their meme-y charm and zero social grace, they are a reminder that it’s okay to be a little bit of a mess, as long as you’re being entirely yourself! From stickers, tote bags and shirts, to embroidered hats and hair accessories, my merch is all about having fun with style while also celebrating creativity and the joy of handmade goods.
