🇦🇺 MAJOR MIGRATION UPDATE — TONY BURKE TO SPEAK TOMORROW

Australia’s migration program is set for a major policy update.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke MP is scheduled to address the National Press Club in Canberra on Thursday, 17 September 2026, delivering a speech titled “The Work of Managing the Migration Program: Who Arrives, Who Stays, Who Leaves.” The National Press Club has independently listed the event for 17 September, 11:30am–1:30pm.

According to current reporting, the Government is expected to outline measures intended to reduce Net Overseas Migration (NOM) and change aspects of the temporary migration system. ABC reports that the proposed package is expected to include significant changes affecting international students and their ability to bring family members, while student numbers themselves are expected to remain broadly unchanged.

🔎 What to watch for tomorrow
📌 International student & dependant arrangements
📌 Temporary visa settings
📌 Visa overstayers and visa-hopping
📌 Migration program targets
📌 Possible changes to visa pathways and processing
📌 Implementation dates and transitional arrangements

⚠️ Important: Not every detail circulating on social media has been officially announced. The Government's formal position and the precise implementation arrangements should be checked after Minister Burke's speech and through official Home Affairs information.

🇦🇺 IMPORTANT AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRATION UPDATE — INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS

There is a significant development regarding international students bringing family members to Australia.

According to reporting published on 16 September 2026, the Australian Government is preparing changes to the migration system that are expected to substantially restrict international students from bringing family members as secondary applicants. The full policy details are expected to be outlined by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke on 17 September 2026.

📌 What is currently known:
🔹 International student numbers themselves are expected to remain broadly unchanged under the reported plan.
🔹 The proposed changes are expected to focus on secondary applicants/dependants of international students.
🔹 ABC reports that 45,991 secondary applicants were granted student visas in the last financial year, out of 337,427 student visas.
🔹 The exact eligibility rules, exemptions, commencement date and transitional arrangements are not yet fully confirmed in the information currently available.

⚠️ Important: This should not be interpreted as an immediate cancellation of existing family visas. Current official Australian guidance still states that eligible student visa holders can include a spouse/de facto partner and dependent children, subject to the applicable requirements.

👨‍👩‍👧 What students should do now
If you are currently studying in Australia, planning to apply for a Student visa, or considering bringing your spouse/children:
✅ Don't rely on social-media posts alone.
✅ Wait for the official announcement and implementation details.
✅ Check whether any transitional arrangements apply to existing visa holders and applications.
✅ Keep your relationship and supporting documents ready.
✅ Check the Department of Home Affairs website before making visa decisions.

🇦🇺 MAJOR IMMIGRATION ANNOUNCEMENT COMING ON 21 SEPTEMBER? 👀

There is currently speculation online about a possible Australian immigration update linked to the scheduled ImmiAccount system maintenance on Monday, 21 September 2026.

📌 What is confirmed:
The Department of Home Affairs uses ImmiAccount for visa and citizenship-related online services, including lodging applications, checking application information and responding to requests.

📅 The maintenance notice shown in the post states that ImmiAccount will be unavailable from 1:00 AM to 4:00 AM (AEST) on Monday, 21 September 2026.

⚠️ Important: Scheduled system maintenance does not, by itself, confirm that a new immigration policy, visa rule or major announcement will be released on that date. At the time of posting, we should treat claims about a major policy announcement as speculation unless confirmed by the Department of Home Affairs or the Australian Government.

🔎 So what should you do?
• Don't rely on social-media rumours for visa decisions.
• Check your ImmiAccount regularly.
• Follow official Department of Home Affairs announcements.
• If you have an urgent application matter, make sure your documents and responses are up to date.

🇦🇺 Namma Australia will continue to share verified Australian immigration and community updates.
What do you think — could we see an immigration announcement around 21 September? 👇

🇦🇺 Australia’s Migration Plan: Major Announcement Expected Thursday

Australia’s long-awaited migration policy update is set to be unveiled by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke at the National Press Club on Thursday, 17 September. The announcement comes after the government postponed an earlier National Press Club address in August while elements of the policy were still being finalised.

The speech, titled “The work of managing the migration program: Who arrives, who stays, who leaves”, is expected to outline changes aimed at managing Australia’s net overseas migration (NOM) and giving the government greater control over migration flows.

Among the areas already reported as being considered are changes to visa processing priorities, temporary migration, working-holiday arrangements and family migration pathways. The government has also been prioritising certain applicants already in Australia for permanent skilled visas, including workers in strategically important areas such as health, construction and aged care.

The exact measures will only be clear once the government makes the announcement. For migrants, international students, skilled workers, families and Australian businesses, Thursday’s announcement could provide important clarity on the direction of Australia’s migration program.
