FOOD ALLERGY WEEK - PLAN WELL, EAT SMART, TRAVEL SAFE

This , Allergen Bureau proudly supports Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia in raising awareness about the challenges people with food allergy face when travelling. Their recent Travel with Food Allergy Survey revealed:

-99% experience stress or worry when travelling
-56% feel plane travel adds significant fear
-35% have had an allergic reaction while away — mostly when eating out
-76% avoid travel because of allergy risks

SESSION 4: Food service – Managing the challenge of non-packaged food

Such a valuable session exploring practical approaches to managing food allergies in tourism, school programs, and quick-service restaurants (QSR), with a focus on collaboration, consistency, and consumer safety.

Maiko Nakashima, General Manager, ZENSHO HOLDINGS ‘Allergen labelling issues in global tourism’ discussed the complexities of allergen labelling in global food service and the need for clearer, more consistent information for food allergic travellers.

Alison Holstrom, Project Officer/School Lunch Program ‘School Food Matters’ presented ‘Feeding children with food allergies in the Tasmanian School Lunch Program’ - Alison shared Tasmania’s approach to safely feeding children with food allergies through coordinated planning and kitchen protocols.

Jeanelle Boyce, McDonald’s Australia ‘Collaborating to Establish Best Practices’ - outlined the innovative ways that McDonald’s are improving food allergen safety through staff training and operational best practices.

Ingrid Roche, Accredited Practising Dietitian / Senior Project Officer, National Allergy Council ‘
Driving change: the power of collaboration’ highlighted the importance of national frameworks and partnerships to lift standards across the food service sector.

SESSION 3: Coeliac Disease – Management and Impacts of Unintended Gluten Presence in Foods

This session delivered groundbreaking insights into Coeliac Disease—featuring emerging research, personal reflections, and standout examples of gluten-free innovation.

A/Prof. Jason Tye-Din, Lead of Coeliac Research Laboratory in the Immunology Division, WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research), presented How much gluten is too much? Offering a glimpse into exciting new diagnostic methods that may not be far off!

Dr Sigrid Haas-Lauterbach, Vice president, Food and Feed Analysis Division, R-Biopharm APAC discussed Analytical Challenges in Gluten Management Along the Food Production Chain, highlighting the complexities of detection and the critical need for fit-for-purpose testing along every stage of production.

Dr Kim Faulkner-Hogg, PhD, Adv APD, wonderfully presenting on behalf of Penny Dellsperger, , addressed ‘Clear Labels, Hidden Challenges: Progress and Challenges for Consumers With Coeliac Disease’ highlighted additional consumer burden faced by people with CD from inconsistent labelling to mental health impacts and the high cost of gluten-free living. As unable to attend due to floods, Penny Dellsperger, was congratulated and acknowledged on her 20 year service to Coeliac Australia and support of the broader CD community.

Rachael Miller, Director of People and Food Safety, The Arnott’s Group , presented ‘Arnott’s Gluten Free Tim Tam: Insights and Learnings on the Commercialisation’ sharing the company’s industry-leading commitment to gluten-free manufacturing—and yes, we love the gluten-free Tim Tam as a milestone moment for Coeliac consumer!

The panel closed by reflecting on the future of care, the power of collaboration, and how we can better protect and empower consumers navigating gluten-free diets.
