I am embarrassed to admit that I have never watched an AFLW game.
In my defense, I typically only watch the AFL on Anzac Day and the Grand Final. Not because I don’t enjoy it, just because life is so full and I forget to put it on.
I am a committed Matildas supporter and as the mother of four daughters, I should have set a better example in supporting women’s sport.
Everything changed last week.
The AFL and Collingwood AFLW team came to visit. And boy did they put on a show. Fully immersing themselves in the community through the local schools, leading girls’ clinics, workshops, hosting Auskick, signings, plus training with the local women’s football and netball clubs.
What struck me during a Q&A session with local Grade 3 - Grade 6 students, was how humble they were.
They shared a consistent journey… Growing up they had to play footy with the boys or had to find other sports. In many cases it was the support and encouragement of their teachers and families that helped get them there. They were now doing what they loved and were grateful for the opportunity to ride the wins and losses as part of a team.
Big thank you to the AFL and Collingwood for activating such fantastic programs across our community. You have inspired on many levels. Whilst we already had a few magpies fans in the house, the love has grown deeper
🖤🤍
They also ride bikes! 🥰
Fixture has been saved… See you soon!
