Launceston Ukulele Jamboree

Launceston Ukulele Jamboree The Launceston Ukulele Jamboree is an annual event to showcase performances from ukulele musicians

Happy Saturday!
Here’s another FB memory of the hootenanny that was our Launceston Ukulele Jamboree of 2025!
Mama Juju & The Jam Tarts from QLD had the Earl Arts Centre jumping! So damn good. 😀👏👏👏
(The tiny little turned timber chair in the foreground of the stage decorations is a family heirloom of mine - a dear old long lost cousin gifted it to me early last year, and I found out that my long departed nan Pearl had breastfed my dad on it, then it was passed to dads sister to feed her kids on it, and then passed to my mum to feed me and my 4 siblings on. History. Gotta love it. It deserved to be on display in a wild celebration of life and community 🩷)

Hahahaaaaaa!!! This clip never gets old!! 😂😂
Our mass playalong "flash mob" in the Brisbane St Mall in the Saturday program of our last Launceston Ukulele Jamboree 2025...
We had so much fun with Nick Rheinberger and Tia Wilson last year! It was completely bonkers, and my stomach hurt from laughing all weekend - just the BEST! They provided one of the funniest evening concert sets we've seen so far (including a naked man - who shall remain nameless - wandering onstage with his modesty maintained by the coverage of a uke 😆 to join in on a song), provided a hugely popular workshop, threw themselves with wild abandon into every aspect of the weekend, and we bloody loved them!
*Our dear mate Mal on washboard has left a huge hole in our hearts now he's no longer with us, but he lives on in our neverending collection of videos and photos!

Our fortnightly playalong sesh at the North Launceston Bowls and Community Club is on this Sunday!
Drive past the Mowbray shopping centre and you’ll see the Bowlo just past the tattoo shop, across from a big construction site. Park in the carpark, or on the street, and head on in! If you’re not a member of the club yet, you’ll need to sign in the book in the bar. Come and say G’day!
I’d love to see your smiling faces - even if you just want to come and have a sing with us, you’re very welcome to join in the fun. We play old rock ‘n roll bangers from the 50s-80s (spiral bound Ukulele Club Songbooks) with a drink in front of us. Very civilised! Haha! Just $5 entry.

See you this weekend for some very low-key, user friendly music fun!

Amazing! Make sure you’re following the Newkulele Festival - Newcastle Ukulele Festival social media for all the exciting updates!

🎉 Exciting News! 🎉

2026 is the year the Newkulele Festival evolves into something MORE — more instruments, more community, more music!

The Newcastle ukulele scene has always been built on connection, and this year we’re expanding that spirit in a BIG way. While the festival will still be proudly uke-heavy, we’re opening the door to a wider range of instruments, workshops, and performances.

Ever thought about trying African drumming, marimba, brass, or percussion? This could be your year to dive in and experience something new.

At its heart, community music is participatory, inclusive, and social. It brings people of all ages and skill levels together to create music, breaking down barriers and fostering connection. It’s about empowerment, accessibility, and making music for everyone — no matter your background or experience.

The 2026 Newkulele Festival will celebrate all of this, alongside fantastic performances, hands-on workshops, and opportunities for both groups and individuals to take the stage.

Planning to perform? Make sure you register. Just keen to join in? Save the dates and come along for the fun!

🌟Bringing Community Music Together🌟

18/04/2026

…..and here’s another memory from one of our Jamborees a couple of years ago. The Big Recovery Sunday Strum at Du Cane Brewing. We made some wonderful mates who came over from New Zealand that year, and I remember how bloody beautiful it was having them sing the last song of the day - soaring harmonies, soulful vocals…. So damn lovely, this community music lark! Makes me cry with happiness on a regular basis, knowing we’ve created such a wonderful source of joy for people with all the uke events and festivals across Australia and NZ. It’s the best! My mad mate, Graeme McColgan, has made some crackin’ videos for me over the years, too.
(Bittersweet memories, watching all of our old videos, because my dear mate Mal features heavily in all of them on drums/washboard and we no longer have him with us. Makes me grin, but get very teary simultaneously! Dear old boy.)

Doing a cleanup on my iPad of old videos and I’m getting no end of joy from rewatching past Jambo clips! Gawd, we’ve had some fun!
This was in a quiet patch at the Pilgrim Church market space while everyone was in doing workshops - the Awkward Strangers legends were busking, and Graeme McColgan, Mick and Quinny (from Don't Tell Bruce) were hanging out with me before we had to dash off to host another segment of the day. So damn good!

This! Have a read, then head to the The Travellers Ukulele Gig Guide to Australia and check out the “files” section to find a uke group near you, wherever you are!
If you’re in or around Launceston in Tas, join our FB group Ukulele & Guitar Jam (Launceston, Tasmania) - we welcome EVERYONE, no matter what your level of playing is. House band playing rock n roll bangers from the 50s-80s every fortnight with a beer in front of us at the local Bowlo. It’s ridiculous fun!

From a small gathering to a packed RSL, this Queensland ukulele club has found its rhythm, and a brain researcher says playing could offer its members a multitude of health benefits.
