🌭 The long weekend is almost here, and so is our Bellambi Bunnings Sausage Sizzle!

If you're out and about this long weekend, come by, say hello, grab a sausage sandwich, and help support Wollongong Conservatorium.

Funds raised will go towards important improvements across WollCon, including:
🎹 A weighted keyboard for student use
🪑 Additional seating and waiting areas
🌿 Outdoor furniture for our garden spaces
🏡 Curtains and other upgrades to make our spaces more comfortable and welcoming

Can't make it on Sunday?
There's still time to support the fundraiser by making a contribution through our fundraising page.

Yesterday, we were thrilled to host the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The University of Sydney Saxophone Ensemble as part of their two-day Wollongong tour, giving our students and community musicians the opportunity to learn from and perform alongside some outstanding young performers.

Led by Michael Duke, eight WollCon saxophone students took part in an inspiring masterclass exploring saxophone fundamentals, breathing and support techniques, overtones, and the instrument’s fascinating history across military bands and jazz traditions.

The day continued with a collaborative workshop rehearsal featuring our Off Street Band, who joined the ensemble for a lively jam session alongside WollCon saxophone ensembles. Later, members of The Con Artists community group joined to attended a special performance by the Sydney Conservatorium Saxophone Ensemble.

WollCon was also proud to help facilitate additional workshops and performances within local schools across the tour, including Smiths Hill High School, with Mount St Thomas Public School and Woonona High School to follow.

A huge thank you to the Sydney Conservatorium Saxophone Ensemble and Michael Duke for such a motivating and memorable experience for our students and community groups.

This week, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible importance of volunteers in our community.

This week, 92-year-old Karl Erett generously volunteered his time to restore a set of rhythm sticks for Tarrawanna Public School. The sticks had become splintered and unsafe to use, but Karl carefully sanded, polished, and treated every single one - and the final result is absolutely incredible.

His dedication, patience, and craftsmanship have given these instruments a whole new life, ensuring they can continue to bring music and joy to young students safely for years to come.
Karl’s contribution is a beautiful reminder that volunteering, generosity, and community spirit can make a real difference.
How will you help your community?

Here at WollCon, there are many ways volunteers can get involved and support music, education, and the arts. Whether you can offer your time, skills, or simply a willingness to help, we would love to hear from you.

To get involved, contact us at (02) 4228 1122 or email [email protected].

Today, our CEO Annette Brown and Schools Program Coordinator Louise Luke are representing Wollongong Conservatorium of Music at the annual Women in Careers Day hosted by St Mary Star of the Sea College.

Open to students in Years 10, 11 and 12, the event brings together 40–50 organisations and professionals to encourage young women to pursue careers they are passionate about.

Today, Annette and Louise are sharing the many pathways available in music - from performance, composition and production to teaching, arts leadership and arts administration - and encouraging young women to explore the opportunities available across the creative industries.

“Your pathway may start in Wollongong, but it can take you anywhere.”

Last weekend, the Australian Guitar Quartet performed in Wollongong, with the WollCon Guitar Quartet opening the concert with an outstanding performance!

As guitar teacher and ensemble director Nigel Jones, Nigeljonesguitarist shared:

“Wow! An incredible night last night in Wollongong with our very own WollCon Guitar Quartet opening the concert with a stellar performance for the Australian Guitar Quartet. It was a night of sublime virtuosity with music by Piazzolla, Bach, Nigel Westlake and Pat Metheny. Thanks for the opportunity – what an amazing night of music and we look forward to our next collaboration.”

We are incredibly proud of our students for performing alongside such highly regarded musicians and for representing WollCon so beautifully. A wonderful evening of collaboration, artistry and inspiring live music.
