U3AYP president Heather Simpson reminded all present that U3AYP is “member owned, member driven” and, as such, could not survive without the help of volunteers.

Central Yorke School students marked National Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3) with a range of cultural activities designed to promote understanding and celebrate First Nations cultures.

Students at Maitland participated in rock painting, weaving, cultural dancing and an AFL “speccy bag” challenge during a lunchtime event on Friday.

They also sampled kangaroo dishes cooked on the barbecue and took part in damper-making sessions.

The newly redeveloped backyard at the RSL Wallaroo sub-branch clubrooms was officially opened with an afternoon party on Saturday, May 23.

About 80 people attended the celebration, with musician Theo providing tunes from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, member Gaynor Jackson said.

Organisers of a Yorke Peninsula Rural Women’s Day event have donated women’s toiletry care packages to hospitals in Yorketown, Maitland and Wallaroo, along with $1000 for each hospital to support patient care services.

Held at The Stables at Halcyon, Sandilands, in October, the inaugural event raised money to support rural women facing challenging circumstances.

Beginning at Stansbury Primary School, Jobe also visited Maitland Lutheran School, Minlaton Kindy and St Columba’s Memorial School in Yorketown, demonstrating how beatboxing works and encouraging students to get involved.

Saturday was a significant day for the Moonta Netball Club, with its courts and clubrooms officially renamed in honour of two of the club’s most influential life members, Lorraine Darling and Gloria Twiddy.

The courts will now be known as the Lorraine Darling Memorial Courts, recognising a woman who served the club as a player, umpire, coach and president.
