Join us at the Manly Writers' Festival this March, and you'll not only have the opportunity to meet and hear from some of Australia's finest writers and authors across a range of subjects and genres, but it will be the only writers' festival in the country with an entire day dedicated to football.

Yes, folks, the Football Writers' Festival has morphed into something bigger, better and mainstream (just like football itself should do!)—the Manly Writers' Festival on 28, 29, 30 March.

At this year's Football Program, you'll hear from:

Jim Fraser
Liz Deep Jones
Dr Jorge Knijnik
P.J. Laverty
Emeritus Professor John Maynard (okay, technically, his new book is about Golf, but you know he's one of us!)
Peter Paleologos
Vince Rugari
Amy Schembri
Texi Smith
Dr Ian Syson
Dr Karen Viggers
David Weiner

To stay up-to-date with the latest news, please head to manlywritersfestival.org.au and sign up as we will soon retire from this space as FWF.

The full program will be revealed on 27 January. Tickets will go on sale to Friends of the Festival on 28 January and to the general public on 3 February.

Also, a festival of this size can't function without volunteers, so if you want to be part of the action (and get a free coffee and t-shirt!), please sign up at the Manly Writers' Festival website. (www.manlywritersfestiva.org.au).

See you in March!

With all the debate about the Matildas & legacy, it's fun to re-visit last year's Football Writers' Festival's Great Debate on that topic.

Head to our website, listen to the podcast and help whet your appetite for this year's festival on October 5 and 6 in Melbourne. We will have a discussion on the Matildas as changemakers and another Great Debate - this time on football's state federations.

Why have we chosen as the theme for this year's Football Writers' Festival?

Because changemakers are the catalysts of progress in every facet of life.

They are the individuals who dare to dream and who don’t just sit on the sidelines but do something about it.

Football in Australia is no different. Despite everything, football endures.

Why? Because individuals committed to making things happen and those who want to make a difference have always been pushing, prodding, and shaping it.

Where some people see problems and just give up, changemakers are innovators, activists, champions, and leaders. They inform, educate, inspire and, most importantly, get things done.

This year’s Football Writers’ Festival celebrates 50 years of changemakers in our game.

Check out the program and the range of authors, hosts, and other speakers at our website. www.footballwritersfestival.com.au

Join us on October 5th and 6th at Preston Lions Football Club, Reservoir (Melbourne), for the fifth Football Writers’ Festival - a festival of football, writing and ideas for readers, writers, thinkers and dreamers.

It was 50 years ago today...the team we now know as the played in their first match vs East Germany in Hamburg. What a team, what an occasion, what a legacy.

As the biggest publisher of books in Australia, we are proud to help bring that and even more history to subsequent and future generations of football fans. Check out our books on our website. Look for the 'Socceroos' collection.

Coming soon! The preliminary program for this year's will be held in on 5 and 6 October. The theme is —past, present, future— on 5&6 October. The theme is - past, present, future - and how our game, to borrow from Gloria Gaynor, will (always) survive.

Hope to see you in Melbourne.

Our condolences to the family, loved ones, friends, teammates of Ron Lord who died earlier this week, aged 94. Ron played 13 international matches for Australia between 1951 and 1964. .

We share below his entry from Andrew Howe's 'Encyclopedia of Socceroos' (published by us in 2018 and 2022).

***
Australia’s goalkeeper at the 1956 Olympics, Ron Lord played around 400 games over almost two decades with Sydney clubs Drummoyne, Auburn and Prague. After playing junior and youth level in the outfield, with Rozelle Waratahs, he switched to goalkeeper at Drummoyne where he made his first senior state league appearance in 1949. He became the first choice keeper at Drummoyne the following year. He then moved to Auburn where he stayed until part way through the 1957 season, when he transferred from the association-backed Auburn to Prague in the new federation league. With Prague he won three consecutive NSW premierships (1959 to 1961), four state (Ampol) cups, and a premiership grand final in 1959 (W3-2 v APIA Leichhardt) before playing out his last state league season in 1964.

His national team stint commenced with four tough matches against the touring English FA team in 1951. He made an appearance for an Australian XI against New Zealand in Adelaide in 1954 (L1-3) and played another five times for Australia throughout 1955 against the representative teams of Rapid Vienna (3 games) and South China, and an A international match against South Africa in Sydney (L0-6).

In 1956 he was selected as first choice goalkeeper for the Olympic Games squad, where he played in both of Australia’s matches (W2-0 v Japan, L2-4 v India) in Melbourne. Hindered by Australia’s international suspension in the early 1960s, it was more than seven years before he made his next national team appearance, against Everton in Melbourne in May 1964 (L2-8). He also made several appearances for the NSW state side, including against Everton from England and Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa.

In 1999 he was inducted into the first FFA Hall of Fame intake.

Football Writers’ Festival

Australia’s first and only football writers’ festival - which doesn’t mean we’re a festival for football writers, but a festival for anyone who enjoys football writing. Books, articles, blogs, podcasts. If you love our game of opinions, you’re going to love a weekend of celebrating football, writing and ideas.

Among the bucolic surrounds of the Jamberoo Pub, home of the Johnny Warren Football Museum.

We have trying again for 21-22 November 2020 in Manly (Sydney) due to #coronavirus restrictions. Back to Jamberoo for 2021.
