Run by the Bay Backyard Ultra Training

Run by the Bay Backyard Ultra Training Friends getting together to motivate one another to run further than they’ve ever run before! The Toilets available at location

Well the runners are recovering after their individual amazing achievements on the weekend! A total of 166.44km was run between all runners involved! How incredible is that as an achievement!

We finished with 40% of runners individually running 53.5km each, which was the desired 8 laps!

None the less, those that ran what they hoped or better, this is what it is all about! Doing your best and being proud of the efforts put in!

Our next run in February (or around then) will look a little more different. We will plan to take the course off-road and add a bit of an incline to it!

We will keep you posted, but in the mean time, please spread the word of this second run coming up early next year, see if you have some friends or like minded people around that would like to experience this!

Ask questions or share stories on here too! If you need a running buddy, post it on here to see if someone could join you!

Happy running everyone!

Not a bad effort 👏👌

Good morning enthusiastic runners!

A little Sunday update:

- we will be ready to run by 7am down at Dayman Park. We will have a marquee set up on the left side of the toilet block under the shade of the trees!

- we will bring a few little things to help with fueling, but please remember to stock up on any supplies that you may need yourself!

- bring a camping chair or something to sit on, as you’ll appreciate it more the longer the day goes on!

- we will have the halfway marked out at the end of Robert St so it’ll be easy to see.

- remember any distance is possible! Just have fun, enjoy the atmosphere of like-minded people and go as far as you’d like (we won’t be strict about the structure), we’re there to have some fun 😄!

- hopefully we get to see a few faces on Sunday bright and early!

Have a happy Friday 🙂!

For anyone thinking about coming along next weekend, don’t think that you have to do all 8 loops. There’s plenty of milestones that can be hidden in there. Whether it’s your first 10k, 20k, half marathon, marathon or first ultra marathon, it’s a great format to tick off a goal with support from like minded people. We only have a few people committed so far but feel free to come and bring anyone along that’s interested. This is only a training run and an introduction to the format so it won’t be real strict and people can join in as they choose, even if they can’t be there for the start of the first loop.

Went for a morning stroll to see what the start and turn around will look like for the 20th of November! Absolutely beautiful and the shade at Dayman Park will be well needed if we get heat like we’ve had!

An easy mark on Robert St to turn around, which will make it so much better for everyone to see on the day. We will be marking and signing this on the day too!

Check out our view 😍 aren’t we lucky?

What do you do?? A great discussion point to help others learn more about foods/fuelling that work for them when training or running ultra events!

Fueling for Ultra Marathons!

This hot topic has a lot of diversity and individualisation. Depending on your bodies demands, it’ll change what you consume!

It can be difficult to find what works best, especially if you have only just become exposed to running that requires more fuelling. Thinking about the basics “what does my body need to keep going”?

1. Fuel - carbohydrates
2. Sodium
3. Sugars + electrolytes
4. Fats
5….. then protein for recovery

When heading out on a run, the bodies ability to break down carbohydrates as a main source of fuel is key. Following this, if your muscles become depleted of sodium, you’ll cramp up before you know it! Sugars will spike your energy however not necessarily keep you going, electrolytes will maintain fluid balance, muscle contraction, and neural activity.

There are so many suggestions on how best to fuel and what foods to consume to help with this, but at the end of the day… trial what works best for you!

You need to consider whether you can eat solid foods or just consume a liquid diet. Think about the time that you have to consume this also!

A product that we have found which has worked wonders has been Infinit Nutrition (GoFar) which is stocked locally at Giant, Hervey Bay, as well as available online. I won’t rant and rave about this product, but have a look at their website to see whether it is something that suits your needs.

As well as this, have a read of Sports Dietitian Australia, which breaks down the considerations to make when fueling for ultra events!

For great local training, head to Toogoom Mountain Bike Trails for clear and easy paths to train on.

The Trail Running Association of Queensland was born out of conversations in 2006 about all the great places to run - "if only there were more events".
