A birthday celebration where everyone has something to hide.

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY takes us to a lavish private island in the late 1970s, where powerful businessman Marcos Timoleon gathers family and friends to celebrate his daughter Sofia’s birthday.

Behind the glamour and extravagance, tensions are building. As old wounds, secrets and conflicting desires come to the surface, what begins as a celebration takes an unexpected turn.

Following its world premiere and award win at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival, ACROPOLIS CATS AND OTHER WONDROUS ANIMALS comes to the Greek Film Festival.

The documentary by Greek-Australian filmmaker Mary Zournazi explores the lives of stray cats and other abandoned animals in Athens, Australia and around the world.

Examining the tenderness and tragedies found in human-animal relationships, the film reflects on love, cruelty, compassion and what animals can teach us about freedom in a rapidly changing world.

Released in 1953, Eva was directed by Maria Plyta, the first woman to direct a feature film in Greece. Sensual and quietly subversive, the film placed female desire and autonomy at the centre of its story at a pivotal moment for women in Greece.

Just one year earlier, Greek women had gained the right to vote in national elections, while 1953 saw Greece elect its first female parliamentarian.

More than 70 years later, Eva has been newly restored in 4K and presented at Cannes Classics, bringing Plyta’s pioneering work back to the big screen. The film also features the first film score composed by legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis.

As she settles into her new surroundings, she discovers love, motherhood and the harsh realities of survival — all while becoming an unlikely symbol of resistance.
