Connemara Pony Breeders' Society of Australia

Connemara Pony Breeders' Society of Australia The Australian Connemara Pony Breeders' Society is affiliated with the International Society based in Ireland and is a sister society to other countries.

ABOUT the CONNEMARA PONY

The Connemara Pony is native to that part of Ireland, west of Galway, known as CONNEMARA. The environment is harsh, lashed with gales from the Atlantic and consisting mainly of bog, mountain terrain with granite outcrops and scree, small, sparsely scattered grassed areas interspersed with granite outcrops. Ponies graze this land and feed on grasses, herbs, reeds, rushes,

bog plants and, where access is available, they feed on seaweed which is rich in minerals and Iodine. Shelter is difficult to find and the ponies utilise the deep gullies of the mountains, rocky outcrops and the shrubbery, where it exists. This environment requires a hardy, surefooted and frugal pony for survival. This Pony is the CONNEMARA PONY. In 1963 Dr Fred Wiltshire imported the Connemara Pony Stallion ISLAND KING. With this import began the Connemara Pony breed in this country. The first purebred Connemara foal born in Australia was Connemara Park Kenneth, (Island Prince (cps 136) x Ardan (1001) (cps 2465)) in 1966, and with him the first Australian Connemara Stud Prefix. In 1966 Connemara Park Ann, (Island King (1) (cps 122) x Ardan (1001) (cps 2465) the first purebred filly was born and she was the first Australian bred purebred. Dr Wiltshire's original reason for importing the Connemara was to improve the Australian Pony. He hoped to add movement, bone and scope to this breed and Island King was in fact registered as an Australian Pony Stallion. Since that day in 1963 the Connemara Pony Breeders' Society of Australia Inc. has continued to grow with Studs in every State of Australia and many ponies being moved around the nation. Milestones have been achieved and achievements have gone beyond expectations in the stock that has been bred and is now being bred by the various breeders. Australian Connemara ponies have been and are being sought by overseas buyers, and with the Australian Society being granted "Approved" Status within the International Society of Connemara Breeders this trend is expected to escalate. The latest import in 1999 being Castle Baron, (Abbeyleix Owen x Castle Dame), imported by Glenormiston Stud in Queensland. This Stallion has his first stock on the ground and it looks like the tradition will continue. Interest is being resurrected and new breeders are appearing on the scene, but former breeders have also discovered a new interest in the Society with the addition of this new bloodline.

⚜️ ISLAND KING ⚜️
Class 1 Stallion (S122)
Born 1958
From the Blue Line.

Sire: Carna Bobby (S79)
Dam: Doon Lass (M1311)
Sire of Dam: Dun Lorenzo
Recorded Height: 137cms

Breeder: John Daly, Lough Mask, Ballinrobe.

The First registered Connemara in the Australian Stud Book.

His Dam “Doon Lass” has 7 listed progeny on the CPBS database, 6 mares and 1 stallion.

He has approx 23 progeny on the Irish database which it seems includes some of the Australian progeny as it has listings up to 1968, including ponies with the prefix “Connemara Park” which was the Australian Stud name, they must’ve been recorded here in Ireland prior to the Australian daughter society establishment. - Open to correction!

The first Connemara Pony imported to Australia was the stallion Island King, imported in 1963 by Dr Fred Wiltshire to improve the Australian Pony. Dr Wiltshire hoped to add movement, bone and scope to this breed, and Island King was originally registered as an Australian Pony stallion.
Dr Wiltshire also imported the first Connemara mare, Ardan.

These foundational imports, including the mare Ardan, provided the stock for the first Australian stud, Connemara Park, and established the breed for performance disciplines like jumping and dressage.

The Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society of Australia was established in 1971 and maintains the stud book, foal register and partbred register in Australia. During the early days of the stud book, a ‘breeding up’ programme was introduced to increase the number of purebred stock in Australia. The stud book was closed to ‘outside blood’ in 1984.

Congratulations to the 2025 recipient of the Annual Sue Clarke Memorial Award: Glenormiston Rosalie.

GLENORMISTON ROSALIE (2003 Domo Cavallo Praize – Glenormiston Rosaleen)

We wish to nominate Glenormiston Rosalie for the Sue Clarke Memorial Award.
In 2012 we were able to purchase Glenormiston Rosalie from the family of Sue Clarke. She had a beautiful filly on her by Castle Baron at the time which had already been sold. We picked her up in 2013 after being weaned. Our goal is to breed out of performance mares so we put Rosalie into work.
Glenormiston Rosalie took to evening like a duck to water. She loved being out performing, especially the cross country phase. Over the next two years she excelled at eventing, winning ribbons everywhere and achieving the Connemara Performance NSW Award.
Glenormiston Rosalie returned to the broodmare paddock where she produced the following fillies for us:
Killeenfarna Misa Ava by Glenormiston Bartley – Class 1 – Competing in Queensland with a junior rider having won several classes recently at the Festival of Showjumping
Killeenfarna Nancy Spain by Achill Fiddler – Class 1 – Broodmare winning in-hand classes
Killeenfarna Mise Ada by Killeenfarna Uncle Joe – Three year old developing nicely
We feel that Glenormiston Rosalie is what the Connemara pony is about.
Glenormiston Rosalie is retired from breeding but at the ripe old age of rising 22 she is out competing competitively with a rider who has had hip surgery. Again, we have the second chapter of Rosalie’s life. I am sure that Glenormiston Stud would have a great chapter one and Sue Clarke would be proud of the competitive deeds of Rosalie.
To us, Glenormiston Rosalie epitomises the Connemara pony in Australia.
