🌱🌏 MESSENGERS OF PEACE – COMMUNITY IN ACTION 🌏🌱

On Monday 14 September, our Joeys and Cubs met at the Gingin CRC to roll up their sleeves and give the gardens a much-needed w**d and tidy-up.

And what a job they did! 💪🌿

There was plenty of pulling, digging, teamwork and some serious discussion about exactly what was a w**d and what wasn’t… 😬😂 We’re pretty sure we didn’t pull out any actual plants! 🤞🌼🤣

By the end of the afternoon, an incredible 25 bags of w**ds had been collected — and rather than going to waste, they were recycled to some VERY excited chooks! 🐔😂

A huge thank you to our Leaders and parent helpers who got stuck in alongside the kids, and to the Gingin CRC for rewarding everyone’s hard work with a nice cold ice cream. 🍦❤️

But this activity was about much more than w**ding a garden.

Our youth have been working towards Messengers of Peace, a worldwide Scouting initiative that encourages young people to identify needs within their communities and take positive action.

Throughout the year our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts have been doing exactly that through activities including:

🌱 Community garden clean-ups
🗑️ Picking up rubbish around our community
🚑 Thanking our First Responders
📦 Taking part in our Homeless Sleepover, with funds raised being donated to Orange Sky
🤝 Participating in community and youth activities
🌿 Caring for our local environment

The Gingin CRC gardens themselves are a wonderful example of community connection. Volunteers including CWA, Gingin Garden Group and third-year medical students from Curtin University have worked alongside the CRC to help transform the area into a native, waterwise and therapeutic garden through w**ding, pruning, planting, watering, mulching and plenty of hard work.

We are very proud that our Joeys and Cubs could play their own small part in continuing to care for this community space. ❤️

This is Scouting. This is community. This is young people making a difference. ⚜️🌏

🚀🔬🤩 CUB SCITECH NIGHT! 🤩🔬🚀

Twelve Cubs + Scitech + lots of energy = one VERY entertaining night! 😂

Twelve of our amazing Cubs spent Saturday evening along with other Cub Units from across the state exploring, experimenting, discovering, pushing buttons, testing things and learning — although sometimes we weren’t entirely sure whether they were conducting the experiments… or WERE the experiment! 🤔😂🔬

They threw themselves into everything with their usual enthusiasm and curiosity, and we couldn’t be prouder of every single one of them. ❤️⚜️
Twelve happy Cubs, plenty of laughs, lots of learning and another awesome Gingin Cubs adventure in the books! 🚀🔬🪐⚜️

🎶🌿🥾 ANOTHER WEEK OF SCOUTING ADVENTURES! 🥾🌿🎶

It was another busy week for our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts, with plenty of creativity, adventure and some very wet feet! 😂

🎸 JOEYS – STRANGE MUSIC DAY 🥁
Our Joeys had a fantastic time creating their own musical instruments using recycled materials and items found around the hall. Their enthusiasm was contagious as they dressed up to form their very own bands and used their instruments to create sound effects for a story. Lots of noise, imagination and fun!

🥾 CUBS – BUSH ADVENTURES 🌿
Dressed in their rubber boots, our Cubs headed out on a bush hike to explore the plants and animals around us. Although our normally wet forest was surprisingly dry, we discovered a pool filled with tadpoles and water plants that definitely needed closer inspection! 🐸

We may have said, “Don’t go deeper than your boots”… apparently that was open to interpretation! 😬😂

Back at the hall, we reviewed Bushcraft Stages 1 and 2 and talked about risk assessments and how we can make our adventures safer.

🌧️ SCOUTS – HIKING & CAMPCRAFT ⛺
A huge well done to our Scouts for braving the cold, wet weather and completing 6km of hiking in the rain! They also practised setting up camp, organising their tents and sleeping gear, then packing everything away again.

Hopefully everyone has finally warmed up and dried out! ☔😂

Three very different adventures, but plenty of learning, teamwork and fun across all our sections. ❤️⚜️

⚜️ LEARNING BY DOING AT GINGIN SCOUT GROUP! ⚜️

It’s been another busy couple of weeks for our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts, with plenty of fire, knots, bushcraft, navigation and teamwork!

🧭 SCOUTS
Last week our Scouts prepared for Nighthawk, brushing up on their navigation skills and packing the Scout trailer ready for the weekend adventure.

After successfully tackling Nighthawk, this week they reviewed the event, cleaning and packing up tents, before putting their pioneering skills to the test. Working together, they built chariots, with everyone required to contribute a knot or lashing. The finished chariots then had to successfully carry two Scouts over a set distance! 🪢💪

🔥 JOEYS
Our Joeys have also been busy learning some great practical skills. Last week they learnt the Reef Knot, discovered some of its uses—including making a sling—and put their skills into action with a safety game.

This week it was all about fire safety and campfire cooking. 🔥🍕 Everyone created their own pizzas to cook over the open fire, followed by campfire biscuits and a fun campfire song.

There was no question about the favourite activity of the night — the campfire biscuits were a huge hit! 😂

⛺ CUBS
Our Cubs have certainly experienced some true Scouting weather lately!

For their Campfire Cookout, they learnt about the fire triangle, campfire safety and how to safely extinguish a fire before working in patrols to build the perfect campfire. They then cooked baked potatoes over the fire and practised Stop, Drop and Roll. 🔥🥔

The following week brought cold, wet and windy conditions — perfect for a Bushcraft Challenge! 🌧️

Using just two poles, a tarp, rope and two pegs, the Cubs worked together to build emergency shelters before moving onto knots. With help from our knot gurus Dale and Melissa, they practised the Clove Hitch, Reef Knot and Bowline, finishing with a very enthusiastic Knot Relay! 🪢

It has been fantastic seeing everyone learning new skills, solving problems, working together and, most importantly, having plenty of fun along the way.

Learning by doing — that’s what Scouting is all about! ⚜️🔥🧭⛺

🌙🥾 NIGHTHAWK 2026 – WHAT A NIGHT! 🥾🌙

What an adventure for our Gingin Lemmings at Nighthawk 2026, held in Toodyay!

After arriving and setting up camp, we enjoyed a beautiful sunny day… but once the sun disappeared, so did the warmth! 🥶 The temperature dropped to a chilly 3°C overnight.

Our team of five Scouts – the Gingin Lemmings – set off at our allotted start time of 7.52pm ready to take on the Nighthawk challenge.

🌙 Their night included:
🥾 Hiking approximately 9km
🧭 Navigating their way through the course
💪 Completing challenges at different bases
🤝 Working together as a team
🌡️ Braving temperatures down to 3°C

After more than seven hours out on the course, our Lemmings made it back to home base at 3.15am! 👏👏

There was just enough time for a couple of hours of very well-earned sleep before it was time to crawl out of the sleeping bags, pack up camp and head home. 😴⛺

A huge thank you and acknowledgement to the Toodyay Racecourse and Toodyay Golf Club for providing the grounds free of charge.

And finally, an enormous thank you to the entire Nighthawk Event Team. So much planning, organisation and volunteer time goes into creating an event like this and giving Scouts the opportunity to challenge themselves, work as a team and make some fantastic memories.

We are incredibly proud of our five Gingin Lemmings. Nine kilometres, challenges throughout the night, freezing temperatures, completing the entire course and a 3.15am finish — what an achievement! 💪🌙

⚜️ WE LOVE OUR SCOUT TRAILER! ⚜️

Our Scout trailer has certainly been earning its keep lately!

📦 Last week it was absolutely loaded with boxes ready for our Homeless Sleepover.

No sooner had we unloaded all those boxes than it was time to load it up again — this time with equipment for our Scouts heading to Nighthawk in Toodyay this weekend! 🌙🏕️

Having our new trailer makes such a huge difference to our Group. It allows us to transport everything we need for camps, activities and adventures, and we are incredibly grateful to the organisations that helped make its purchase possible.

📦🏠 HOMELESS SLEEPOVER 2026 🏠📦

What an amazing night!

I really thought we had more than enough boxes… but our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts proved me very wrong! 😂 They used every single one, building some absolutely massive creations that became their shelters for the night.

One of the best parts was watching everyone help each other, work together and make sure the boxes were shared around so everyone had the chance to build. ❤️

🎒 WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE?

As part of the evening, we stopped to think a little more deeply about homelessness with our Survival Backpack Challenge.

Each group was given pictures of 20 different items — things like a sleeping bag, water, warm jacket, socks, food, torch, toothbrush, phone charger, first aid kit, pillow, raincoat and family photo.

The challenge? They could only choose 10.

Once they had made their choices, we talked about what was hardest to leave behind and why some things we use every day suddenly become much more important when you don’t have a safe and secure place to call home.

🌟 A huge well done to our Joeys who slept over! A couple were a little nervous about staying the night, and we are so proud of you all for giving it a go.

🥣 Tea was soup and bread, and there are so many people to thank for making the night happen.

Thank you to everyone who helped with transport, made pots of soup, buttered bread, cut up fruit, worked out how to light the stove 😂 and tackled the never-ending dishes!

A very special thank you to Hathi, Pumpkin and Gecko for giving up your Friday night to help us. We really appreciate it. ❤️

And a huge thank you to everyone who donated boxes for this activity. We would also like to acknowledge Jess from Edina Australia Pty Ltd for bringing boxes up for us. Those boxes certainly didn’t go to waste! 📦

Cleaning up in the morning took a little encouragement… and several reminders that some of us would eventually like to go home! 😂 But we got there in the end.

During our reflection, the verdict was pretty clear:

📦 More boxes!
⏰ More building time!
🌙 And a couple even voted for another night! 😱

There was also unanimous agreement on one very important matter — the favourite soup of the night was the Lasagna Soup! 🥣🏆

Awesome job, everyone. It was a fantastic night filled with teamwork, laughter, learning and plenty of cardboard. ❤️📦

Hopefully, along with all the fun, everyone went home with a little more understanding of the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness and an appreciation for the things we can sometimes take for granted.

🌏🧣 Scarf Up Day 2026 🧣🌏

What a fantastic evening celebrating Scarf Up Day with our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts!

Proudly led by Angus and Sonny, we started the evening by “scarfing up” the statues outside the Gingin CRC, giving our community a colourful reminder of the values and spirit of Scouting before heading off on our next adventure.

From there, everyone walked to Granville Park to begin our World Scout Passport Challenge.

A special package containing passports for the World Scout Jamboree had been scattered around the world! Working together in their patrols, our Joeys and Cubs travelled from country to country, completing exciting challenges and collecting passport stickers at each destination.

After earning every passport sticker, the teams returned to Scout Headquarters to reflect on their journey, sharing what they had learned about Scouting across the world and the friendships that unite Scouts from different countries and cultures.

A huge thank you to our Scouts, who did an amazing job running each of the country challenge stations with enthusiasm and encouragement.

And, as always, a very special thank you to our adventurous parent helpers Liam and Kirsty (Wren). Your ongoing support makes these memorable experiences possible. We truly appreciate each and every one of our awesome parents.
