Deep End Farm

Deep End Farm Small Sustainable Property We are creating a property that will support us and our community. Our first priority is to make this a healthy diverse ecosystem.

We want to share our experience and learn from other similar projects in the Huon Valley. We want to grow a small amount of high quality produce and sell it locally.

Very happy to say that we have sold the bottom property. For those who came in late: Dave and Cassandra, who struggle to keep up with even basic operation of Deep End Farm, bought the adjoining property some time back. The idea was we'd build a kind of farm tour, permaculture property there. We did some pretty fantastic things. Tree planting on contour (pictured), renovated the old apple shed, barndance, quite a few farm tours, ran our food business from there. But, in the end it was more than we could handle. So we sold it. It settles on Friday. The buyers/new neighbours seem very nice. We're going to miss the barn. But the fact that I had to go so far back through our photos to find pics that didn't look like a bit of a grind illustrates what a good decision it was. No we're not leaving the farm, the main property is still going strong and we're having fun with the extra time we have for it now that we've retired from the food business. We're about to list stuff that we can't fit at the top property on marketplace.

We had breakfast at Cambridge House B&B yesterday. Perhaps the best Japanese Breakfast we've ever had (and we've had a lot). Local, seasonal food prepared by a chef that really knows how to get the most out of the ingredients. We loved kaiseki when were in Japan. We must go back for dinner.

Today's Salamanca Market was cancelled. It's very windy here and we had 50mm of rain in the last 24 hours. A sleep in this morning was very nice. But now we're faced with a market load of unsold buns. We've had quite a few requests to buy buns outside of market. And in fact we've sold quite a lot of cold buns in the last few weeks. So, we've decided not to try to attend a make up market, but instead ask people to order directly with us. If you want cold buns, please contact us. We'll, by negotiation, deliver to Hobart this week. (perhaps to central locations).

Closing of Deep End Farm food business

Many of our regular customers already know. We're retiring. So our last markets will be Farmgate: Aug 18 and Salamanca Aug 10, 17, 24, 31. We've already done our last Geeveston Feast. We'll still be around, we'll still be living on our farm, you'll still see us at markets and events (but not as food vendors).

Thank you to all our customers for all your support over the years. We're happy to call many of you our friends. The whole venture was an unexpected path for us and we loved it.

7 kg of cherries from our friend’s trees, pitted and dried. They’re really good. Intense cherry taste. I reckon we should do another round and we’ll have cherries until next season.

STUN tree, grown from peach seed, hardy and prolific. Observe evidence of possum and birds sharing the harvest. This tree provides more than we can eat too. Might play with drying some this year.

The Huon Valley Chess Festival is on this weekend. Deep End Farm has put up $500 for Huon Valley Player's prizes. The community event on Saturday evening is free for Huon Valley residents. Dave is playing the lightning event, but not the main event (due to market responsibilities). I think those prizes listed below are a bit screwed up. There are $10k in prizes! The Grandmasters in attendance won't be taking all of it :-) Details at: https://www.huonvalleychess.com.au

Great ratings prizes at this year's Huon Valley Chess Festival!

There is no reason not to have a go with prices for best unders, and best new players!
