History of the Head of Schoolgirls’ Regatta

MLC hosted the first HOSG Regatta in 1985. The Regatta consisted of the Heats and Finals for 7 events in which 16 schools and
240 girls competed during a single day. There is no record of the number of spectators who attended. A strong cross wind at
Ballarat made conditions very interesting for crews and officials.

1984 Last year of schoolgirl particip

ation in APS Head-of the River. Principal of Morongo initiates meeting that establishes
the HOSG Regatta.

1985 MLC Hosts the first HOSG Regatta in Ballarat – there were 7 events, 16 schools and 240 competitors.

1991 The HOSG Regatta Committee incorporates as an Association.

1992 The HOSG regatta is run over 2 days for the first time and has 18 events

2002 The HOSG Regatta Committee hosts the regatta replacing the host school arrangement. A long term agreement entered into between Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta Committee, the City
of Greater Geelong and the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority to retain the regatta at Geelong.

2003 The Regatta reaches the largest ever number of competitors with 2151 schoolgirls competing in 322 races across 35
events.

2005 The committee continued to host the regatta and appointed Rowing Victoria to carry out the dual role of providing
officials for the regatta and acting as event manager. There were 2009 competitors from 41 schools.
