Our Story

Annual Fingal Valley Festival, celebrating 40 years in 2020 on Saturday 14th March!

About the day: Coal Shovelling - shovel coal into a skip which sits on a set of scales. Once the weight of half a ton (508kg) is reached, a light and siren will go off and the fastest time of the day will win. Singles World Record - 26.72 seconds (Held by W.Miller) Doubles World Record - 14.8 seconds (Set in New Zealand) Fastest Time at Fingal - 29.5 seconds

Roof Bolting - This competition is based on the simulation of what coal miners do underground to secure the roof of the mine. 3 drills are put into the concrete block using a vertical pneumatic drill, beginning with a 2 foot drill, followed by a 3 foot drill and then a 5 foot drill. The blocks are made specifically to simulate ‘real’ ground and the competitors can hit rock in the block, just as they would underground. Finally a bolt is inserted with a chemical which rapidly sets in the previous bored hole. The operators are to secure the bolt to a required torque and maximum length it can protrude from the block otherwise time penalties are incurred. Two bolts are inserted in each heat. World Record - 1 minute 54 seconds

The Festival is always a great day out to be enjoyed with arts, craft and produce stalls, yard dog trials, wood chopping, hot saw exhibition, Sports Shear, food vendors and more!
