*** VATA-VAWA EASTER 2019 TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS NEWS UPDATE***
We were blessed with perfect weather to enjoy the VATA-VAWA's Traditional 12th Annual Easter Tennis Championships
over the weekend of 20th and 21st April 2019 at Fairfield Tennis Courts. There were 112 players participating in this
year's championships. The majority of the competitors were local Australian-Vietnamese however we also had the opportunity to welcome several players from Victoria and other communities (from East Timor, The Philippines and China) participating.
Over the two beautiful days, hundreds of tennis fans, supporters and competitors turned out at this carnival-like community event. There were 120 matches played in 7 competition categories including the Juniors event.
It was wonderful to see strong community participation and appreciation as Vietnamese-Australian Tennis Association members had worked tirelessly for several months raising funding and planning meticulously for this major sporting event in the Vietnamese-Australian community calendar.
After two long days of competition and many tight matches, the following players victoriously reached the finals of our VATA-VAWA 2019 Easter Tennis Championships:

It is worth noting that 2019 marked a major shift in the demography of our participating players. Young, strong and
exciting players have put their feet down battling hard for the nice trophies and prizes. Supporters were treated
to many exciting matches between young keen local players and those ranked in the top hundred in Australia.
In particular, we were especially impressed by the skills, power and maturity of 15-year-old Tommy Nguyễn
who advanced through to the Men's Open Singles quarter finals round and stopped by our former champion Brian Trần.
Congratulations to all the players, sponsors and supporters for taking part in this 12th historic community event.
According to a supporter: "Going to VATA-VAWA's tennis championships is like going to the Australian Open...
A Vietnamese-Australian Open... with better access to yummy food and drinks" :)
