Sandman 50 A long run on the beach.

13/05/2026

Like the bay at night, we have been quiet.

We have checked the charts and looked at options for Sandman XII. With all things considered we will hold the event on Saturday 23 January 2027.

Things to know. Registration fees have remained the same ($70 solo, $95 Duo, AURA members discounted), bib collection will be from Text and Co prior to the event, no changes to the 2026 course will be made. A new website is live www.sandman50.com.au and email [email protected]

Stay tuned for registration dates.

Hello,
Let us introduce ourselves, Megan, Bill and Sam.

Our first acknowledgement is to Andrew, who has built a truly unique event, and we are honoured to be picking up the baton and carry it forward into the future. Andrew will continue to be involved in the event and support us with his knowledge and understanding of all things course related.

We have been involved with different sporting events and clubs of the southwest for several years. Many people will recognise us from the Cape to Cape MTB event, the Yahava KoffeeWorks Cool Water Classic and Busselton Festival of Triathlon.

Our vision for the event is to maintain the ethos and atmosphere that Andrew has created over the years. As with all things there will be some changes to the event with the aim to improve the participant experience.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to the start line under the full moon in early 2027. The event date will be announced very soon.

Please send any inquiries to [email protected] and we will get back to you.

And...

As some of you know already, this was my last Sandman 50 as Race Director/Event Organiser. This was a decision that was both simple, and spectacularly difficult - the classic head vs. heart tussle. In the end, commonsense prevailed.

After 11 years, it's time to hand it over to a team with more energy, resources and imagination. More on this in the coming weeks - but this is definitely not the end of Sandman 50. Planning for Sandman XII is already under way.

Thanks to everyone for being part of Sandman 50 over the years, especially the volunteers, who successfully kept nearly 1500 runners hydrated, fed, amused, on course and, above all, safe.

It's been fun.

Now, however, I might even get to run it...

Before dawn, it was back to the beach. For no good reason - not even the slightest pretence of a course check - just because that's how the day begins. The moon shone over the bay, eventually the sun rose, and the sea sighed ever so slightly.

The self cleaning system had done its job, there was no hint of yesterday's excitement. The only tracks were my own, and in 12 hours, they too will have been erased.

The heavens do what they want, and the sea always wins.

Run on, in awe.

Please advise any errors.

Thanks to everyone for being part of Sandman XI - especially the volunteers, some of whom racked up their 11th straight year of keeping runners happy, hydrated, safe, and on course on the beach.

Here are a few views from the Siesta Park aid station.

And...did anyone find a black Salomon race vest in the finish area? Please let me know, as it has a good home.

Thanks - and good night. 🌛

OK, that's it for me - the last of 100 consecutive sunrises and 1500km of sand.

Tomorrow in the early morning, it's all yours. Go placidly - and enjoy!

If you run to the Jetty and back fast enough, you can take a part of it with you.

You're going to have to decide why you're here when you reach Abbey boat ramp and the Broadwater sea wall (please refer to the User Manual and newsletters).

While the route around the front is part of the full Sandman experience, due to winter sand drift there is no way to make this course quicker than the dry option. In both cases, the length and depth of the underwater sections are such that it's quicker to go inland. It's your call which way you go - wet legend or dry racer?

See the images (and captions) for details.

Meanwhile...at this point there is no good reason not to go around the front of the Siesta Park sea wall just prior to the 14km aid station. A marshal at the end of the wall will try to talk you out of side stepping the sea side experience. If you cannot be convinced, it's a long hike inland to an illuminated course marker before you can return to the water's edge (see the User Manual).

And finally, there's a bit of a swamp just prior to the sea wall at the 16km mark. Not life threatening, and easy to go around, but the straight line course might suck your shoes off. Image attached.

We've scheduled final course checks later this week, and you'll be advised of any last minute instructions and/or changes to track conditions at bib collection.
