It was great to see an update from St Matthews Catholic School, Mudgee this week as they prepare their wethers for Dubbo in August.

Students have been learning about nutrition, fleece and meat qualities for different breeds of sheep, and also halter training all wethers to ensure they are show ready.

Their wethers are well on track with all six weighing over 60kg and on track to hit 70kg plus in August.

Thanks for the update

Don’t forget to share your photos to this page to keep us up to date on your progress.

Yesterday we attended the Egelabra Merino Stud Open Day at Warren.

It was a wonderful day with close to 300 people attending from the industry including commercial and stud producers, agents, wool specialists, nutritionists and industry peak bodies.

The highlight was several schools competing in this years NSW Schools Merino Wether Challenge took time out of their school holidays to attend and learn more about the Merino and how to get the best performance out of them.

Here is what Sammy and Annabelle from Snowy Mountains Grammar School travelled all the way from Jindabyne had to say on what they learnt on the day.

Warren Central School Welcomes Our Wether Challenge Team! 🐑

A big thank you to Duncan Lance, Stud Manager at Egelabra Merino Stud, who delivered our six Merino wethers today for the NSW Schools Merino Wether Challenge.

The NSW School Merino Wether Challenge is a fantastic hands-on agricultural program where students from schools across the state manage a team of Merino wethers over six months. During this time, students learn practical skills in sheep handling, nutrition, and animal husbandry, gaining real-world experience in the sheep industry.

The program culminates in a two-day event in Dubbo this August, where teams are judged on meat and wool quality, while students also take part in agricultural career workshops and industry activities.

We’re excited for our students to get started caring for the wethers and learning more about the Merino industry. A big thank you again to Duncan and the team at Egelabra for their support of Warren Central School agriculture.

Stay tuned for updates as our students begin their Wether Challenge journey!
