Match-day Football

Match-day Football Challenging poets and photographers to capture their 'essence of the game - a football match played No fee is required.

Match-day football offers photographers and poets a challenge

This challenge – Go to any football match played anywhere in Tasmania between 3rd June and 30st July and capture your ‘essence of the game’ in words or pictures. You are asked to create a poem about or photograph of a football match; events on the oval and its immediate surrounds from when the umpires walk onto the field to when the l

ast umpire or player walks off at the end of the match.

• Maybe a poem written about a team’s quarter time huddle at a match played at Bothwell with players surrounded by their supporters better describes the essence of the game than a player’s kick for goal.

• Maybe a photograph taken on a cold winter’s day at Winnaleah showing a young boundary umpire throwing in the ball captures the essence of the game much better than a high mark taken by a player.

• Maybe games in the Tasmanian Women’s League, Circular Head League or in reserve or junior games better describes the essence of the game than a player’s kick for goal

Can you capture the essence of the game in a poem? Does your photograph, that instant in time, show your ‘essence of the game’? Match-day Football is NOT about whether or not Tasmania should have an AFL team, State and local governments’ sponsorship of these teams or the scale of any economic effects flowing on to the tourism sector. You can submit your poems or photographs to Match-day Football. OR

You can enter the Match-day Football competition for a small fee. This competition is offering prizes ($300, $150 and $75) for the best three photographs and the best three poems. You can find the submission/entry form and rules and conditions below. Selected poems and photographs, including main prize winners, will form the Match-day Football Exhibition. All poems and photographs submitted to Match-day Football and entries to its competition will be offered to the State Library of Tasmania.
