Today is National Sorry Day.
At Cowes Primary School we respectfully acknowledge the Boonwurrung/ Bunarong people, the traditional custodians of this land. We would also like to pay respect to the elders past and present of the Kulin nation and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people.
This morning Wryker and Sophie lead us in a tribute and minutes silence, to mark this important day.
National Sorry Day is a significant day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly for survivors of the Stolen Generation. The idea of holding a ‘Sorry Day’ was first mentioned in the recommendations from a report called ‘Bringing Them Home’, which was presented in Parliament on the 26th of May, 1997. This report was the result of a National Inquiry into the forcible removal of Indigenous children from their families, communities and cultural identity. On this day in 1998, the first ‘Sorry Day’ was held in Sydney, and it is now commemorated across Australia, with many thousands of people participating in memorials and commemorative events, in honour of the Stolen Generations.
On this day, we hold a minute's silence to pay respect to First Nations ancestors who were part of the Stolen Generation.
Thank you everyone. Please enjoy your day on the beautiful land of Millowl.
